Fresh is a small, low-cost, file-management utility that essentially offers an amped-up version of the Finder’s “Recent Items” lists, along with a quasi-replacement for your Desktop called “The Cooler.”

The app’s streamlined interface consists of two simple “zones,” or panes, which display your “Fresh Files” (basically, anything that’s new to your computer or recently changed) and “The Cooler” (a user-defined collection of files that you want to have quick access to). “Fresh Files” is particularly great for tracking downloads and Mail attachments, and the Cooler can come to your rescue when you want to keep tabs on important files or folders. You can also pull up contextual menus on items to reveal them in the Finder (or just see their path), and you can control which files Fresh displays here, too (for example, if you don’t need to see .log files, you can have Fresh suppress that extension–or you can have it ignore particular files or folders).

You can pull up Fresh’s two zones the way that you pull up any app (for example, through the Dock or by Command-tabbing through apps), or you can use a customizable hot key–and the app’s near-invisibility is one of its greatest assets. Fresh also has a hidden tab on the right side of the screen that you can drag files to, for placement in the Cooler or for tagging (Fresh has an optional, searchable tagging system as well).

As with all productivity-enhancing apps like this, Fresh may or may not jibe well with your workflow, but it provides a lot of easy-to-use and potentially time-saving functionality in a sleek, seamless package.

TagIt for Mac allows you to search through the tags on your computer, either the existing ones from pre-Mavericks or the new OSX-created tag system. The result is in some ways redundant for those that have only used tagging in Mavericks, but can be very useful for anyone who has an older version of OS X or existing tags on their computer they have no means to search with the new OS X.

After installation of TagIt for Mac, it will open as a search interface, asking you to type in the keywords you’d like to search for and to set a minimum rating for your search. This allows you to filter based on multiple criteria. While OS X 10.9 allows you to do something similar with the built-in OS X tagging system, this system offers a few more features, including comma delimiting in your searches. The real value in TagIt comes for those that have either used a similar system in the past or who are still using an older version of OS X that doesn’t use tags, because you can add tags to files even in 10.8. The interface is basic and doesn’t offer a lot of advanced features, but it runs smoothly and the search tool integrates with OS X search, smoothly.

If you are not fully satisfied with the search tools and tagging options provided by OS X 10.9 or if you have an older version of OS X on your Mac, consider downloading this free tagging tool for your computer. It’s not as powerful as some other classification tools, but it offers fast, responsive controls and augments Apple’s built-in search, nicely.
