Useful organization: Uninstaller categorizes your installed apps into several tiers: Recently installed, Large programs, Infrequently used, and Windows Updates. These are often the main criteria that most users would follow to justify removing apps.

Batch uninstallation: You can queue up uninstallations for multiple applications, something glaringly absent from the traditional Windows control panel. Though it’s not an automated procedure, nor is it a simultaneous uninstaller, the Batch Uninstaller works as listed and is one of the most useful features of IOBit Uninstaller 3.

Cons

Not in real time: If IOBit Uninstaller is currently running and you install a new program, the Programs list will not refresh. This requires you to restart the program for the most up-to-date list of applications.

Final Verdict:

IOBit Uninstaller 3 is a lightweight uninstaller with some useful tools that give it an edge over the default Windows uninstaller. Batch uninstallation and its remnant removal tools are probably the application’s biggest advantage, but overall we found this program to be most useful for those who have high volumes of applications and programs installed. We recommend this app if your computer is in need of a slimming down or if you’re planning to do some fall freshening of your Windows machine.

IObit’s latest version release brings Malware Fighter to 2.0 and showcases a much more eye-popping design that is more consistent with the modern look and feel of Windows 8.

You’ll be greeted with four basic options: Scan, Protect, Update, and Action Center. Since version 1.7, IObit’s latest design feels much cleaner and certainly more intuitive for the average user. The original overview graph that the previous version opened with is now tucked away.

Previously included features like cloud scanning and quarantine lists are still present, but reside in a more modernized settings panel to the right, labeled by monochromatic icons. Scanning settings and options exist as on/off switches, similar to those in Windows 8. Make no mistake: Version 2.0 is undoubtedly developed for touch screens.

Though this version is free, that also means it’s ad supported. However, IObit has opted to remove all the extraneous social-sharing options, with the exception of a Like button on the bottom right; again, we’ve never used it but if you’re really into it, then the option is there.

We ran a full scan to first test for any bogus claims of “threats” that come from detecting the usual temp files cached by your browser, as well as other common false alerts. IObit came out clean, which was a good sign. Scan speeds were also respectable given the state of our file system. You can also set custom scans and isolate Malware Fighter to look for threats just within your memory processes or select drives.

One minor issue we had with Malware Fighter was that it classifies the absence of Advanced SystemCare and Smart Defrag as “problems.” There’s no option to clear out these warnings, and choosing to fix them results in an automatic download and installation of IObit’s other product offerings.

Compared to its previous version, IObit Version 2.0 is a step in the right direction despite its questionable labeling of ASC and Smart Defrag. But if you’re looking for an easy-to-use, lightweight malware scanner, then Malware Fighter does the job.

iFreeUp clears junk files from your iPhone or iPad, such as those created by apps or leftover system logs. The app also safely shreds photos, music, and videos to prevent retrieval from recovery software. Besides cleaning, iFreeUp allows you to manage and transfer files between your iOS device and your Mac.

Pros

Easy to use: iFreeUp’s easy-to-navigate user interface will get you going in no time. Choose between two tabs: Quick Clean lets you scan and take out the trash, while File Manager lets you access apps, photos, music, and so on, to export and securely delete them.

Transfer files quickly: IFreeUp shines in its ability to swiftly transfer files from your iOS device to your desktop. If you don’t want to be bothered by iTunes and iPhoto, for example, iFreeUp is a great alternative way to grab files from another device.

Cons

Tidy but not clean: iOS itself does a pretty good job of keeping junk files to a minimum. The system files and leftover junk on our system took up only a couple hundred megabytes of space. Unless you’re desperate for space on 8GB or 16GB devices, it’s more effective to delete photos, videos, or music.

8.3 coverage a bit buggy: We saw minor hiccups running the latest version of iOS. IFreeUp would not recognize files on devices running iOS 8.3. Just eject, unplug, and retry for the correct response.

Bottom Line

IFreeUp does a good job of removing junk from your iOS device — but there is not much trash to take out. The app works better as a file manager for your devices. You’ll get better results using iFreeUp to delete files manually rather than relying on the automated scan.

Start Menu 8 is a Windows utility that bypasses Windows 8’s tile-based Start screen interface, re-introducing the familiar desktop UI and Start menu from previous versions of Windows.

Pros

A familiar interface: The Start button and menu has been a mainstay of Windows since Windows ’95. In Windows 8, Microsoft decided to do something new, but the truth is that it is hard to adjust to something new after so long. Start Menu 8 resurrects that old interface to make navigation familiar again.

Stylistic options: Start Menu 8 lets you completely customize your new Start button. First, you can choose what you want the button itself to look like. You can either select a button that looks like the classic Windows 7 button, or opt for something more modern that looks like it fits in with the Windows 8 style.

Customized menu: When you walk through the setup process with Windows 8, you can select exactly what you want to have included in the menu. This lets you keep it basic and only include your most commonly used items, or comprehensive so you can navigate through your entire system from the menu. A great addition is the ability to incorporate a menu for your Windows 8 Metro apps.

Cons

Time to set up: The only real drawback is that it took a fair bit of time to set up exactly the way that we wanted it. A few presets or similar quick-start options might have minimized the time it took to get going.

Bottom Line

This program takes only a few minutes until you’re returned to a more familiar interface. You can customize the menu exactly as you want, so you can either have a menu just like the one in Windows 7, or you can create your own customized option.
