If you’re reading this review, you probably already know you need a program like Intelliscore Polyphonic Wav to Midi Converter (PWMC). But do you need this one? It’s tough to say. In theory, PWMC takes sound from almost any source and converts it to the MIDI format.

It can accept music directly from a MIDI instrument, a CD, a cassette, an MP3 or WAV file, or even from a microphone. In automatic mode, it processes music with just a little help (you beat the tempo). Unfortunately, this feature didn’t produce good results in our tests, even with simple piano pieces. Moreover, the trial version only converts the first 15 seconds of any piece, making it hard to judge the output quality.

IntelliScore Ensemble WAV to MIDI Converter provides a complex collection of tools for dissecting a song or musical recording. However, its setup and operation require some musical knowledge, which limits its appeal.

While the program’s interface features a helpful Wizard, some aspects were still confusing. Because IntelliScore relies heavily on musical terminology, the average user or amateur musician may be overwhelmed. The program’s best part was its capability to take any MP3 and convert it to a MIDI file. You can also decide whether the file should be played with the same instrumentation as the original recording or something completely different. There’s a large Instrument List to choose from, including dozens of options ranging from rock quartet to Dixieland jazz band and solo piano. The resulting MIDI file sounds synthetic and computerized no matter what setting you choose, but that’s typical of the format. It’s impressive how the MIDI correctly recreates the original’s notes and tempo, no matter what instrumentation you choose. The program claims to offer a feature to view and dabble with a song’s notation, but this requires owning a program that’s not included with IntelliScore, so we couldn’t test it. Overall, this is a fun and easy-to-use program, but only serious MIDI-focused musicians will get the most out of it.

IntelliScore Ensemble WAV to MIDI Converter limits each song to 15 seconds during its trial period. It installs desktop icons without permission. This program’s complexities limit its appeal to musicians, but we recommend it for them.
