Unfortunately, MainMenu went from being a free app to a $20 app without any corresponding leap in functionality, so it’s hard to recommend it, given the number of lower-priced (and even free) competitors with similar functionality available.

MainMenu lives in your menu bar, with a customizable icon that lets you know when it’s running. MainMenu can help you repair permissions, run Chron scripts, rebuild your Spotlight index to speed up searches, force empty your Trash, clean or flush a variety of caches and logs, and more. You can also set up a suite of regular tasks for MainMenu to run as a batch in the background, and you can receive Growl updates to track MainMenu’s progress.

Archiver for Mac lets you access the contents of 28 archive types, including the most popular ones, and can compress files quickly. This premium app comes with a 15-day free trial and features drag-and-drop interactions, both in the app, itself, and through its icon. Despite its ease of use, you still have access to advanced features like splitting archives in several parts and content encryption.

Pros

Clean-cut interface: Archiver for Mac features a minimalist main window with a drop zone. Once a file is dropped there, the app presents you with a preview of the files that were loaded and gives you several choices depending on whether you’ve placed an archive or another type of file in it.

Potent: When creating archives, the app lets you choose the name, format, compression level, and encryption used. When placing an archive in the software, you’ll be able to convert it to another format, split it into smaller parts, and extract it.

Speedy: When testing, we extracted a 60MB ZIP file in two seconds and created an archive of a 71MB file in seven seconds.

Cons

Two-step file-splitting: You cannot split a document into parts directly: you have to archive it first.

Bottom Line

If you’re looking for an easy way to manage your archives, you should definitely give Archiver for Mac a go. The app’s functionality, default output folders, archive handling and association, completion actions, and app bundle support make it worthwhile. Also, you’ll be impressed with its performance.
