You’ll be impressed with this very handy, simple Flash video player, though a couple of quirks bring it down a notch or two from perfection.

FLVPlayer’s five-button interface doesn’t need a help file. Opening an FLV file is a mere matter of choosing it from a dialog or dragging and dropping it onto FLVPlayer. We really liked how this utility always correctly set the aspect ratio during playback, but some users may wish that the videos could be enlarged to fill the screen.

The volume slider is unobtrusive but difficult to finely set. On the other hand, the video position slider can be set to the hundredth of second. Buttons to move to the beginning or end of the video aren’t as useful as they could be since the End button is disabled. Occasionally, moving the position slider to a particular second didn’t work. Instead, pressing Play simply moved the slider to its previous position and restarted the video.

Flaws notwithstanding, anyone who has a collection of Flash Video files will love this tiny freeware player.

MacGourmet for Mac is designed to provide a central storage and organizational system for your recipes within OS X. It works seamlessly in this regard, providing dozens of useful tools that are reminiscent of iTunes in many ways, making it easy to organize recipe files, create new ones, share them with friends, or print recipes to index cards or other media from your desktop.

After installation, you will be prompted to select the layout and interface for MacGourmet when it opens. You can change any of these options later from the preferences menu but this will affect how the app looks at first. You can also create a MacGourmet.net account to sync your recipes. You’ll need to create a local database, so setup and installation can take a few extra minutes but it only happens once and the app does a great job of walking you through everything. From there you can start adding recipes, creating cooking notes, making shopping lists, noting your favorite cheeses, beers, wines, and recent meals. There are options to get recipes from the Web, as well, connecting with partner sites to pull them to your database, or searching in Google and providing an interface to copy and paste everything. The interface is astounding in MacGourmet and it runs smoothly no matter what you are doing.

If you cook a lot, enjoy food, or want a better system than notecards in a box by your refrigerator, download MacGourmet. It’s free to try the first 20 times you open it, after which you’ll need to pay for an upgrade; but for those that use it frequently, it is well worth that cost and then some, offering a hugely robust suite of tools that any cook will appreciate.

My Living Desktop is an enhancement for your Mac that lets you show a moving video loop as your desktop background (or screensaver) and it’s gotten a lot of new features in recent updates.

Once the program is installed on your Mac, you can choose from 28 high-definition video scenes (six scenes in the trial) to either play as a screensaver or as a moving background while you work. The app comes with audio as well so you can immerse yourself into the widely varied living environments from snowy scenes to calming beach views. If you want more variety beyond the included scenes, you can purchase new ones at the My Living Desktop Web site for under $5, but it will probably take you awhile to get sick of what’s included.

While we think My Living Desktop is a well-executed idea and definitely a unique concept, it’s probably not for everybody. A moving background with sounds–no matter how beautiful–is bound to be distracting if you need to get some serious work done.

Nevertheless, if you want to try something different as your desktop or want a live-action type of screensaver and don’t mind the movement on your desktop, My Living Desktop is definitely a good choice.

It’s important to note that the app is only a 10-day trial with six included scenes. If you’re going to download this software, make sure to check it out quickly so you can decide if you want to buy.
