Users who want to work with their library of audio files but don’t want to use iTunes have few well-known options. Cefipx for Mac allows users to manage their audio library and devices in a well-designed application, albeit with limited functions.

Available as a free trial version with a 50-song transfer limit, the full application requires payment of $16.95 to unlock. The native installer worked well and the program setup completed quickly and without any bugs. It was unclear if technical support was available. There were no tutorials and it did not appear that any instructions existed. Fortunately, the interface of Cefipx for Mac is easy to interpret and appears as it does in other, similar manager programs. Immediately, the program prompts the user to connect an iPod to the computer. Once this is done, the program reads the contents and displays a main menu with key information on the device and its capacity. Additional menus appear for managing the songs, podcasts, and other media on the device. These can be downloaded to the computer system or managed on the device, itself. Unfortunately, there did not appear to be any menus to link to iTunes for downloading new songs, which would have been a useful feature. Users can send songs from the program into iTunes for later playing.

For those who want an alternative to iTunes, Cefipx for Mac seems to be a useful program, but lacks some features that would make it a complete replacement.

Users with a Mac computer and several mobile Apple devices may want a way to track them from their Mac. iBackup Viewer for Mac is a simple application used to monitor information on an iPhone or iPod.

iBackup Viewer for Mac is available as a free application, but does have a button that solicits donations to the developer. Fortunately, there were no unexpected problems associated with download and installation. The program did not have any instruction or tutorials, but its menu was easy to interpret without them. At startup, the computer does not require any additional configuration and simply loads data already on the computer for viewing. There are easy-to-identify tabs for contacts, calls, notes, apps, photos, and the Internet. Clicking each brings up an addition menu with relevant information. For example, the Internet tab lists Web sites viewed, and the photo area shows all photos taken on the device. A drop-down menu also makes it easy to switch between additional iPhones or iPods, if you have more than one you want to track. During testing, it appeared as though this data comes from synching the devices to iTunes, and only displays the information from when the device’s last plug-in occurred.

Easy to use and with few additional functions over the iTunes system, iBackup Viewer for Mac does succeed in placing device backup information in an easy-to-navigate program.

AddressBook Cleaner for Mac is designed to eliminate duplicate entries from your address book with just a few clicks. With the trial version, you can scan for duplicates but won’t be able to actually delete them, although you can still get an idea of how the app works.

AddressBook Cleaner for Mac needs direct access to your contacts in order to operate. Before the app starts to search your address book for duplicate entries, you can check which conditions will apply to the search. We checked a couple of fields and performed the search. Duplicate entries populated in the main application window within seconds and we were able to select which ones to keep and which ones to delete. All entries you wish to keep will be marked as “keep” in green, and the ones you wish to remove will be marked as “delete” in red. We marked a couple of entries as “delete” but were not able to actually remove these due to the limitations of the trial version. Up to this point, the app performed smoothly, though.

AddressBook Cleaner for Mac looks like a decent solution for eliminating duplicate entries in OS X address book. The application proved to be very good at finding duplicates, but the trial version won’t let you see if it’s just as good at getting rid of them.
