This handy application is on the plain side, but it lets you easily manage the hardware device drivers installed in your system. My Drivers has a straightforward interface with easy-to-navigate buttons and file-header menus, although we appreciated the inclusion of the extensive help files.

The program impressively extracts all drivers or only the non-Microsoft versions with the click of a button. The list of drivers is displayed in the upper panel and includes name, version, date, and manufacturer. Select a driver to see more information in the lower panel. My Driver lets you search for the latest updates and lists those with newer versions detected. You can choose which you want to download and the program creates a folder for you to install the update. The program allows the user to create a backup copy of any or all listed drivers, and has tools for restoring and deleting drivers.

The trial version is limited to 15 days, but that should be enough time for intermediate to advanced users to see if this easy-to-use driver-management utility suits their needs.

You can update and back up drivers on your computer with this helpful application, but driver updates are available only from the publisher. WinDriver Ghost’s clean and simple interface is well-designed for novices. Finding all installed drivers is accomplished quickly.

You choose to back up the drivers in one of three formats: CAB file, EXE file, or folder set. These backup drivers can only be extracted using the WinDriver Ghost Restore function. This application also installs new drivers, and archives Outlook and IE Favorites. The Update function searches for the latest driver version available for download. However, it checks only one default URL for updates and doesn’t allow the user to choose a desired URL. In this 15-day trial version, it includes the Need a Language Translator menu to provides links to Web-translator applications.

Despite the easy-to-understand interface, novice users will still need a visit to the help file. WinDriver Ghost’s backup function is quick and useful, but advanced users will dislike the short trial period and URL download limitations.

When you install or reinstall hardware, peripherals, and even software, Windows sometimes doesn’t recognize the changes. Huntersoft’s Unknown Device Identifier is a free tool that scans your PC to identify any devices that Windows doesn’t recognize. It can also find and install drivers for devices.

As luck would have it, one of our test PCs had some recent upgrades that left it unable to recognize a digital camera’s driver–just the sort of job for Unknown Device Driver. The program started scanning our system as soon as we opened it, displaying the results in a list view. Each individual entry’s tree view expanded to show the device’s driver as well as Details including its PnP ID, Vendor, and Chip Vendor, where applicable. We scrolled down to the appropriate entry and expanded its view. Right-clicking the Vendor line opened a menu listing Find Driver, Contact Vendor, Save to File, Send to Printer, and Backup Driver. Clicking Find Driver opened a Google search. We found an updated driver and installed it, resolving the system error. The program offers few options beyond language choices, updates, and the capability to save or print the list or individual entries. The Backup Drivers feature actually links to downloads of additional software (not freeware). Many users may prefer a different solution for backing up their drivers, and in any case we prefer frequent, fresh, and full system backups.

When you see those little yellow exclamation marks in the Device Manager, you can try to resolve the issue using the standard Windows driver update tool, but many times that won’t work; if Windows had the right driver on hand, it would install it instead of flagging the error. Unknown Device Identifier doesn’t really do anything you can’t do in Windows anyway; it just makes it easier. Its chief value is in providing a fast, easy-to-use, centralized driver information center.

WinDriver Ghost Enterprise Edition quickly gathers and displays all installed drivers in your system. Users select from three backup formats: specified folder, CAB file, or EXE file. Installation, removal, updating, and the backing up of drivers is accomplished via a right click or a toolbar button. An additional feature includes the backing up and restoration of Outlook files and Internet Explorer Favorites.

In select tests the application crashed repeatedly when collecting system drivers. With the versatility and accuracy of WinDriver Ghost Enterprise Edition’s results, any level of user will find this application efficient, although we find the 15-day trial insufficient to fully test all its features.
