Although it’s light on features, WebTime 2000 easily synchronizes your drifting system clock with a National Institute of Standards and Technology atomic clock. Its simple, tabbed interface is easy to understand and offers options for server selection and general program settings. Select a timeserver from a relatively short list of world atomic clock servers, and hit the Synchronize the MS Windows Clock button, and the application resets your PC clock. We’re disappointed by WebTime 2000’s feature set. Unlike other applications in its class, it offers no automatic synchronization options. In case of bad connections, selecting another working timeserver is a trial-and-error process, since the program has no capability to reconnect you. Despite its obvious limitations, any user in search of an ultrasimplistic time-correction application may find this freeware suitable.

This lookup tool helps solve the mystery of Windows error message codes, but its design leaves something to be desired. Simply enter the code number, and Error Message for Windows will display its description. You also can view the entire list of codes, numbering 0 to 10,112, which we like. Descriptions are brief, however, and novice users may need more information than this program provides to understand what failed. The design flaws are the program’s biggest downfall. To begin, its window can’t be resized and longer messages can only be read with the lookup tool. Additionally, the misleading Print button only displays the list in HTML format, with no print options found on the page. Even the freeware status doesn’t give this application an edge in the market. Other no-cost lookup utilities we’ve seen offer the same basic features, but offer a more user-friendly design, and we suggest users pass on Error Message for Windows.

Out of the box, Windows can connect to the Internet, defrag your hard drive, and play a mean game of Minesweeper. But it doesn’t come with a decent calendar. The free Calendar 2000 attempts to fill that gap. It isn’t exactly what we’d call a scheduling application, but it sits in the system tray and lets you create recurring monthly and annual events. It shows standard holidays on their respective dates, and you can add and delete them as you like. The interface is relatively dull, but on the plus side you can set the time for four cities and specify map coordinates for a remarkable graphic display of the current moon and sun position. Unfortunately, the program doesn’t support event alarms. That’s a serious omission, but if you can get around it, you’ll find that in other respects Calendar 2000 fares pretty well.
