Stardom: The A-List is a game about clawing your way to the top in Hollywood almost any way you can. You can lie, fight, cheat, and schmooze your way through a list of accomplishments to become a star. Stardom: The A-List is easy to install if you have Mac OS X 10.7 or later. This is a free download, but there are “star packs” with upgrades for sale through the App Store.

The graphics in Stardom: The A-List are good; cartoonish, but effective at conveying the storyline. As part of your road to stardom you need to dress the right way, meet the right people, work on a few sets and get good reviews and fans, and date (and dump) the right people. Schmooze in the right clubs and with the right people, and doors open. Get in a fight with the wrong person and the doors close. Navigating the process is not so much about talent as doing the politically right thing in Stardom: The A-List. The gameplay is interestingly different, and it does tend to entertain and amuse as you work your way through. It’s also addictive, and there is good replay potential.

Stardom: The A-List is a different type of game than we usually encounter, but it works well and is both fun and interesting. While to really succeed in the game you need to buy cash and star power at the store, which can get expensive, most people will have fun with the free version.

Frontline Commando is a third-person shoot-em-up game based on the premise that you’re behind enemy lines and getting payback. While not exactly a novel concept, it is pretty well done here. Frontline Commando installs easily enough, and when launched the graphics and soundtrack are solid. You see the back of your avatar and an aiming reticule, and the gameplay consists almost entirely of putting the crosshairs on someone or something and blasting it to pieces.

Frontline Commando is a free download, but to really enjoy the game you’ll have to purchase add-ins. These add-ins add up quite quickly. A small crate of gold, used to purchase upgrades, is $9.99, but the larger cases range all the way up to $49.99 for a “huge” case of gold. A Frontline Commando addict could easily drop $50 to $100 for add-ins to really make it through the game’s levels properly. The level design is good, with a nice variety of terrain (interior and exterior), and there’s a good selection of guns (hence the need for gold!) to choose from.

The free Frontline Commando version is entertaining enough and gives you enough play to get into the game, or decide it’s not for you. For those who get into it, there’s quite a bit of entertainment in this shooter. Definitely worth a try if you like arcade-type shooters, but for those who are hooked the game quickly gets expensive.

With a name like Blood & Glory you probably are not expecting a family-oriented casual game. And you’d be right. If you’ve enjoyed the TV series Spartacus, then Blood & Glory will appeal to you. It’s based around gladiatorial combat in which you battle in the arena to the death, all for the glory and adulation of the crowds. Blood & Glory installs quickly.

Graphically, Blood & Glory is a treat. The graphics are well done, but a warning that there is a huge amount of blood (hence the name!) would be tame. This is probably the goriest game we’ve played in a while. After selecting your weapons and armor (which depend on your fighting style), you fight your opponents using keyboard and touchpad controls. Fighting is actually quite simplistic, with timing and luck being important. Losing a fight is easy and quite dramatic. Wining is exhilarating and leads to medals that contribute to your prestige. The base Blood & Glory game is free, but upgrades to add capabilities are available.

One of the appealing aspects of Blood & Glory is that the fights are not identical. There’s enough variety and challenge to keep you interested for hours and hours. Having said that, this is an easy game to learn but very hard to master. Becoming a champion will take a lot of practice, and a lot of your blood will be spilled along the way. While it’s not for everyone due to the gore and subject matter, we had a fun time playing Blood & Glory and likely will continue to for quite a while. There’s even an iPhone version for battling on the move!

Samurai vs Zombies Defense for Mac is an animated combat game ported from other platforms. It is available as a free download from the App Store with in-game purchases to add extra capabilities and allow purchases. The app installs easily.

The idea behind Samurai vs Zombies Defense for Mac is that you are a Samurai warrior facing a horde of zombies out to overrun your village. While you can fight the zombies yourself using your swords, you also need to recruit help from other allies to handle the masses of zombies. Some allies are powerful warriors, others are farmers with very little skill, but every dead zombie is a good zombie. There’s a set of mini-games that help you earn special items, and you can buy upgrades by spending in-game gems bought with real cash. The graphics are good, with splashes of color throughout to liven things up. Gameplay is interesting and addictive.

We played Samurai vs Zombies Defense for Mac for a few weeks off and on, always finding it both amusing and fun. In the end, fun is what we expect from a game of this type, so Samurai vs Zombies Defense for Mac is a success. While the in-game purchases can get expensive, there’s a lot of fun with just the base game.

Bombshells: Hell’s Belles is an aerial combat game for Mac OS X, iPad and iPhone that puts you in charge of one of over 200 planes with cannons, missiles and guns to shoot opposing planes. The free version of Bombshells: Hell’s Belles is limited in terms of leveling options, but you can of course buy upgrades and special features from the publisher. Bombshells: Hell’s Belles installed easily on both our MacBook Pro and our iPad.

Bombshells: Hell’s Belles is going to take a little practice to get the hang of the controls (if you’re using a mouse, you’ll find the pitch controls work the opposite of what you would expect). The graphics are cartoonish and a little sexist but well done. Having said that, the controls are easy to learn through a few tutorial levels, and the planes are easier to control with the iPad than the MacBook; we did find the game quite engaging on both platforms. Bombshells: Hell’s Belles isn’t going to win any awards from flight simulation fans, but as a quick shooting game it is engaging.

Bombshells: Hell’s Belles was fun. After you get a hang for the controls (especially on Mac OS platforms) and the gameplay fictions, you’ll either love this game and be hooked, or get bored quickly. The constant hints about buying upgrades are there, but you can still get a lot of fun from the free app.
