Absolute Uninstaller is an intuitive program that promises to remove software components that the Windows Add or Remove Programs function cannot. The program’s ease of use and effectiveness make it a great choice for this task.

First, let’s talk about what Absolute Uninstaller doesn’t do. If your computer is already a mess of cyber junk, Absolute Uninstaller isn’t going to clean it up for you. We had multiple folders in our Program Files that should have been removed along with the program they came with, and Absolute Uninstaller couldn’t help us with those. The program’s interface is very similar to the Add and Remove Programs view, and although users can search for programs from within Absolute Uninstaller, it doesn’t seem to search beyond that list. The program did, however, correct an invalid Registry entry, which was nice. To really put the program to the test, we reinstalled another program that, earlier in the day, had failed to uninstall completely on its own. Although Absolute Uninstaller hadn’t been able to detect the left-behind components of this software after it was uninstalled manually, when we used Absolute Uninstaller to uninstall the program, it removed it completely. The program asked us if we wanted to remove the component in question, making sure that it wouldn’t inadvertently remove something important to our system. Although the program’s Help file was quite brief, the program’s intuitive interface makes it easy to use.

Absolute Uninstaller is free. It installs and uninstalls without issues, and we recommend this program to all users.

Glary Utilities has a good reputation among users who need safe and reliable system cleaning and maintenance in an easy-to-use package. Glary Utilities Slim is a freeware bundle of Glary’s disk and registry cleaners and other system tools. It also enables easy, centralized access to a number of built-in Windows tools. Some of its features you’ll only need once or twice a year, like an oil change; others are for regular duties. It slims the package by leaving out some automatic and duplicate features.

Glary Utilities Slim bears a strong family resemblance because it shares the family interface. The compact interface is tabbed along the top for Status, 1-Click Maintenance, Modules, and Menu, which accesses the Restore Center, Help, FAQs, Settings, Skins, and more. After checking for updates to make sure we had the latest definitions, we moved to the 1-Click Maintenance page, which offered check boxes for the Registry Cleaner, Shortcuts Fixer, Startup Manager, Temporary Files Cleaner, Tracks Eraser, and Spyware Remover. The Tracks Eraser lets you choose which programs and features to clean. The program offered to clean Windows, IE, and Firefox, including plug-ins, but not Chrome. We’ve run Glary’s tools often. The scan returned Details for all the results it found; we simply deselected those we wanted to keep. Clicking Repair Problems fixed everything we left checked. The Modules tab enables individual access to Glary’s scanning and cleaning tools but also many extras: Startup Manager, Context Menu Manager, File Shredder, File Undelete, Encryption and Decryption, Splitting and Joining, and access to Windows tools like Check Disk and Disk Defragment.

What’s left out? Well, a separate disk defragmenter, for starts. Solid-state drives (SSDs) are the future, and many users already use SSDs for Windows and hard disk drives (HDDs) for storage. You should never defragment an SSD, which doesn’t become fragmented. The disk defragmentation tool built into Windows does a swell job, so there’s no need to include one in Glary Utilities Slim. A better question might be, what more do you need? Chances are, if it’s not in the Slim version, it’s in the Pro upgrade.

Glaryutilities’ Disk SpeedUp is a free standalone utility that analyzes, defragments, and optimizes your disk drives or individual folders. It offers manual and automatic defrag options as well as automatic shutdown after defragmenting finishes.

Like many system utilities, Disk SpeedUp has a colorful interface with large, clearly labeled buttons and tabs labeled Defrag Show and Settings. The Defrag Show tab showed our two disk drives and their capacity, free space, status, and percentage of fragmentation. In the middle was a standard defrag map, while at the bottom of the interface, Disk SpeedUp displayed tabs with our three partitions, each with individual graphs and data. To the left, three prominent buttons let us choose Defrag Now, Auto Defrag, and Schedule options. We chose both hard disks and all three partitions. We could analyze, defrag, or optimize our selected disks or folders as well as pause or stop the operation.

Disk SpeedUp claims “smart” defragmentation methods that speed up and improve the process. We can’t swear to their effectiveness other than to note that this tool is certainly fast. The color-coded defrag map gave us a good visual indication of the state of our disks. We could check for updates, but there’s no Help file, though the developer’s Web site offered some information. Under Settings, we could change the language, integrate the program with Windows startup and context menus, set defragmentation and optimization parameters, and add files to the Exclude List. When scheduling an automatic session, we could select defrag, optimize, or both.

There’s nothing wrong with the built-in Windows disk defragmentation tool, at least nothing that Disk SpeedUp won’t fix, first by dramatically speeding up the defragmentation process and second by optimizing the disk by moving large files to the end of the drive and other means.

Security Process Explorer is a freeware replacement for the Windows native Task Manager. It comes with some very useful functions, but the simplistic layout doesn’t adapt well when displaying deeper investigations into the relationships between different processes.

It offers many of the same functions that other process-managing programs offer. You can explore the connections between different processes, block processes, end them, and view in-depth information about a particular process. You can even search on the Web for a particular process, but unlike other programs, Security Process Explorer takes you to a proprietary page to learn more.

There’s nothing particularly wrong or bad with this app, with the top pane displaying the active processes and the bottom pane showing process information. It’s stable, it only eats about 4MB of RAM, and beginning users will appreciate that the information clutter isn’t overwhelming. Still, the program feels unfinished, as if an interface that veered toward either slickness or geekiness might serve it better. There’s no doubt, though, that you can get what you need from this useful app.

Registry Repair can quickly scan your Registry for errors that could potentially slow down your computer, and then remove them to improve operating efficiency. The program begins to scan as soon as you open it, and it presents results clearly so you can decide what action you’d like to take.

Pros

Fixing options: Once a scan is complete, you can see the errors the program has identified grouped by category in the main viewing window. Clicking on one of these categories will expand it to show a detailed list of the individual issues, and both single items or entire categories can be selected or deselected for fixing.

Speedy operations: Both scans and repairs are completed quickly in this program. There is also a clear progress bar to let you know exactly where you stand as the app is working.

Cons

Multiple scans needed: During testing it took four scans completed back-to-back to finally get a scan to return with no errors to report. While the first scan found more than 200 errors and the next one had that total down to five, it still took several additional scans to get rid of those final five, which seems a bit excessive.

Bottom Line

Registry Repair is a handy utility that can improve your computer’s overall operating speed efficiently. It’s not the most feature-packed program you’ll find, and it can take multiple scans to remove all errors, but it still gets the job done for free and in a relatively short amount of time.

Glary Utilities is one of the most consistently recommended freeware system maintenance suites, and our experience with it suggests such confidence isn’t misplaced. It combines a Registry Cleaner, Shortcuts Fixer, Startup Manager, Temporary Files Cleaner, Tracks Eraser, Spyware Remover, and much more in one compact interface. Glary Utilities Portable is a full-featured portable freeware version of Glary Utilities. It can run for portable drives on any compatible Windows PC, making it a great addition to portable PC toolkits.

We extracted Glary Utilities Portable and clicked the executable file, which ran the program without requiring an installation process. A simple interface offers four tabs: Status, showing version and license information; 1-Click Maintenance, with selectable tools; Modules, which accesses a wide range of tools individually; and Menu, which opened an Explorer menu accessing the Restore Center, Help, Settings, Skins, and more. The 1-Click Maintenance tool let us select which cleaners to include in the process. The Modules tab offered multiple tools under sections labeled Clean Up & Repair, Optimize & Improve, Privacy & Security, Files & Folders, and System Tools, which accesses not only a Process Manager, IE Assistant, and System Information tool but also many useful built-in Windows Standard Tools such as CheckDisk, System File Checker, System Restore, and Backup. The Settings included a long list of commands we could add to right-click menus in Windows Explorer, an Ignore List, and other options.

We ran a scan, which identified the number of problems found in each tool. Clicking Show Details opened pop-ups with detailed information about each entry plus the option to deselect it for cleaning. When we were satisfied, we clicked Repair Problems. When the cleaning finished, we could press Scan for Issues to check for additional errors. Like the installed version, Glary Utilities Portable cleaned and spiffed up our system while doing it no wrong. Used wisely, it’s an effective system maintenance solution that includes many useful extras.
