Our hard drives often end up cluttered with files whose names are meaningless, especially when it comes to image files–the file names assigned by cameras are often just random strings of numbers. This makes it extremely difficult to keep files organized and easy to access. BatchRename Free is a powerful way to rename groups of files, and we feel confident that it can meet the renaming needs of just about anyone.

The program’s interface isn’t the most intuitive we’ve ever seen, but it’s not too difficult to figure out, especially with a visit to the online Help file. Users first add files that they want to rename, either individually or in directories. Then it’s time to select the format for the new file names. The program comes with over 100 renaming rules, everything from adding prefixes and suffixes to deleting parts of file names and changing to upper or lower case. The program even includes rules for resizing, rotating, and converting images, and file names can be created based on EXIF data for images and ID3 tags for music files. If that’s not enough, users can also create custom rules by selecting parameters from a series of drop-down menus. Not sure if the format you’ve selected is exactly what you want? Click the Preview button to see what your file names will look like without actually making the changes. We’ve seen numerous programs that rename batches of files, but we don’t think we’ve ever seen one that’s quite so versatile. BatchRename is a great choice for users who like a high level of customization with their file names, but it also works well for users who aren’t so demanding. In short, we think this program is a great choice for just about everyone.

File Property Edit Free from Foryoursoft is a free tool that can alter file attributes such as the date and time a file was created or last modified, singly or in batches. It’s a stripped-down version of a “Pro” shareware tool. While it’s fully functional, requiring no purchase or registration to use its available features, some useful functions are available only in the paid version, such as Undo Changes, Export, and Change Other Properties.

During the installation, a nag screen informed us that we could purchase the Pro version at a discount. File Property Edit Free has an attractive, efficient layout that has an integrated shell color tool next to the button accessing the online Help file. However, there seems to be no options or settings beyond what’s available on the interface, and many of those aren’t available in the freeware. Controls let us add and filter files, select all, change file times in predetermined or custom methods, and perform a few other basic functions. In addition to the previously mentioned disabled functions, we couldn’t use the Quickview or Add Variable functions, or any of the subfeatures of the disabled tools. Nevertheless, we were able to browse to and add files and quickly change the file time stamp from a drop-down list or enter custom time and date settings as well as change the following file attributes: Archive, ReadOnly, Hidden, System, Temporary, Offline, NotContentIndexed, and Normal. The tool processed a folder full of images in no time. Checking showed that File Property Edit Free had done its job; when we opened the properties sheet for an image, the file showed it had been created hours ago, not months ago when we’d originally downloaded it.

File properties editors are useful tools, and File Property Edit Free certainly does a good if basic job. We wonder if disabling the Undo Changes feature at a minimum reduces its usefulness. If you only need to change some basic attributes, it’s worth a look. However, we’ve tried other freeware file properties editors, and we think it wouldn’t hurt to have a look at some of them, too.

Changing file attributes in one fell swoop is extremely easy, thanks to this well-designed and capable program. Despite a short trial period and file limit, we were still able to fully experience its superb performance.

File Property Edit has a very clean and easy-to-navigate interface that will appeal to all user levels. It flows in such a way that you know exactly where to go first. We added an entire folder and opted to include paths and subdirectories. The program also provides a filter feature. The contents of our folder immediately appeared in the interface window. From there, we had the options of modifying the file time and setting file attributes, such as archive, read only, hidden, and offline, to name a few. As soon as we clicked the Apply Changes button, the program instantly modified the file attributes. We were able to just as easily change the file attributes back to normal using the same steps, as well as by clicking the Undo Changes button. We were reminded of the program’s 50-file trial limitation, but other than that the process worked exactly as it would with the registered version.

We would have liked to have seen a built-in Help feature, but there is a link to the publisher’s Web site for help. We also would have liked to have a longer trial period than the given 15 days. Still, if you’re looking for a no-nonsense file manager, this program is a worthy contender.
