OpenContacts is a contact management program that has many useful features. Unfortunately, the unintuitive interface makes the program somewhat frustrating to use.

Is OpenContacts impossible to master? Not at all. But contact management programs tend to be pretty intuitive, allowing users to perform basic functions like adding contacts right off the bat. OpenContacts requires more work, more clicking around and skimming the Help file. The interface, made up of multiple little windows and plenty of drop-down menus, does not make it particularly easy to add or edit information. That said, with a bit of experimentation, most users should be able to get the hang of it.

But why bother, when there are other, more intuitive programs out there? OpenContacts has some pretty cool features that aren’t always found in contact management programs. We loved that we could click on an address and go directly to the location in Google Maps, and that Skype users are able to make calls to contacts from within the program. We also appreciated the ability to cross reference people and businesses; after entering George Smith and the ABC Widget Co. separately, we could create an association between the two. This is a great time-saver if you have multiple contacts who work for the same organization.

OpenContacts is free. It comes as a ZIP file, installs desktop icons without icons, and leaves folders behind upon removal. We recommend this program for intermediate and advanced users, or novice users who don’t mind taking some time to figure things out.

Thanks to its helpful tutorials, KP Typing Tutor let you practice typing groups of letters and sentences, as well as get familiar with key positions on your computer’s keyboard.

This program is a great solution for busy professionals who never took a typing class in school. KP Typing Tutor is easy to use for adults and children, and there is a link to a Help Web site should you have any questions. We liked how the program offers different types of practice and instruction. You can practice typing anything from simple groups of letters to whole paragraphs. There is even a little game that you can play where you try to type words that float down from the top of the window as fast as you can before they hit the bottom. The game makes the monotonous activity of typing practice fun.

KP Typing Tutor’s only drawback is that it does not install or uninstall cleanly. When installing the program, Desktop and Quick Launch icons, and bundled applications were added without asking. Icons and folders also had to be manually removed after uninstalling the program. However, we still found KP Typing Tutor to be a great program for practicing and improving your typing skills.
