It’s no secret that we’re fans of “other” browsers, but the browsers often seem like well-kept secrets themselves, especially when you get into the ranks of those Web browsers that stand way behind the “Big 3” (or 5, depending on how you feel about Opera and Safari) in market share. That’s a shame, because many of these alternative browsers are worth gossiping about.

To compete with the big players, let alone other would-be contenders, many of these up-and-comers offer unique and interesting features and capabilities you won’t find in the famous browsers they’re based upon. You read right: nearly all the “alternative” Web browsers are built from the same rendering engines used in IE, Chrome, or Firefox. Which brings us around, finally, to FlashPeak’s SlimBrowser Portable.

SlimBrowser is based on the latest version of Microsoft’s Trident engine, the same one used in IE9, so it’s fast — especially with cutting-edge Web sites. It also has the features you expect in the latest browsers, such as a download manager, form filler, and secure browsing. But what really sets SlimBrowser apart is its awesome range of options. Like the installed version, SlimBrowser Portable is free, but you can take it with you, settings and all.

SlimBrowser Portable’s user interface doesn’t really stand apart from its competitors, which is something we can say about the competitors, too. Web browser design has attained a sort of functional maturity, and SlimBrowser’s tabs, toolbars, and overall layout break no new ground. But the old-school file menus loaded with options are exactly why we like SlimBrowser; it hardly seems to leave anything out. It’s more than we can describe, but one quick example: under Views, the Side Panels menu let us open five different sidebars, including Favorites, History, and ScriptPad. No add-ons or extensions required! Despite so many choices, we found SlimBrowser easy to configure, including importing our bookmarks from IE, Firefox, and Chrome. The Help file runneth over.

SlimBrowser Portable performs as well as any contemporary browser, including its own installed version. Both versions offer speedy browsing and a plethora of options. SlimBrowser Portable adds yet another one: total portability.

SlimBoat Web Browser for Mac features a rather basic interface and design, but allows for secure, fast, and above all, fun Web browsing. The browser is light, performs well, and offers a decent alternative to the more popular mainstream options.

After installing, the free browser opens and requests the user to set it as the default program. In addition, the application asks the user to import bookmarks from other browsers, and lists all of them on the computer. After importing cleanly, SlimBoat Web Browser for Mac starts up, and its main window is well thought out. As is typical on other browsers, the top displays navigation buttons, a URL area, and a search field. Tabs are displayed just above the main browser window, and are clearly labeled for identification. Users can add new ones not only from a top drop-down, but also from the window, itself. The browser offers basic design but includes a number of useful features such as built-in ad blocker, built-in pop-up blocker, form filler, ability to organize sites in groups, support for easy sharing on popular social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, StumbleUpon, and Google Plus, as well as the ability to download videos from YouTube, quickly and easily. During testing all features performed well and pages loaded quickly without any errors. Testing also did not reveal pop-up ads to be a problem.

The number of browsers available, both mainstream and new, makes choosing a truly unique and functional one difficult. SlimBoat Web Browser for Mac works well, offers some interesting features and would be a good solution for users looking for an alternative to mainstream browsers. It is also worth considering for those who are just looking for an easy way to download videos from YouTube.

We like trying different Web browsers, so when a browser that’s actually more than a Chrome or Firefox clone comes along, we’re definitely interested. Though it’s not radically different in appearance or performance, FlashPeak’s lightweight, cross-platform SlimBoat stands out from other browsers by integrating many of the capabilities that the others add on with extensions. It’s built on QTWebkit, but all you really need to know is that it’s fast and safe. SlimBoat gives up nothing to other browsers when it comes to features and capabilities, either; it inclusdes tons of features such as a form filler, ad and pop-up blockers, a download manager, a YouTube downloader, and integration with Facebook, Twitter, and other social media and Web sites. SlimBoat is free, too, with versions available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. The latest release extracts MP3 audio from YouTube downloads and is Windows 8-ready.

SlimBoat can import data from IE, Firefox, or Chrome. In layout and looks, SlimBoat resembles other modern browsers, nearly all of which use those design elements that work best, such as tabs and bookmark toolbars. SlimBoat also takes design cues from other browsers, such as Netscape’s draggable toolbars (and even the little dots like finger grips). But we could change a lot about SlimBoat’s looks from the View menu, including its Application style, and from the Settings dialog box. And SlimBoat doesn’t just go with the flow, either. It’s got plenty of nice touches of its own, like an integrated display of local weather conditions that we enabled and configured by clicking Weather in the Settings. SlimBoat offers a plethora of other options, plus tools such as the Ad Blocker and Popup Blocker. We could translate languages and change the interface language from the Languages menu, though the languages pack is an optional download for those who want to save space.

SlimBoat is a speedy craft. It launches and loads very quickly and handles well in direct comparisons with other browsers, though it couldn’t beat the current champ, Chrome, in bandwidth tests. In real-world Web browsing, though, SlimBoat feels distinctly crisp and fast. Slimboat has earned its place in our browser fleet.

There aren’t that many Internet browsers. It was interesting to come across one that isn’t as well-known or as well-advertised as the others: SlimBrowser. We can’t say much about the security of this browser, since time will only tell, but it has some interesting features.

You can save all open sites as a Group, for example, which is a very convenient feature for anyone that has to regularly open the same sites simultaneously for work. There is also a Language tab, which connects you to Google in order to translate a page. It’s not perfect, obviously, but it was nice to see a way to easily access such a feature. In File you can also view recently closed sites, which is nice for when you accidentally close the wrong page. You can change the skin of the browser, but most of the skins aren’t aesthetically pleasing. It has a lot of the other, familiar features of other browsers so you wouldn’t be missing out on those if you choose to give this a try.

Downloading this Web browser was easy. The installation was quick and easy as well. You can set up SlimBrowser to be your default browser during the installation process if you want to, but it’s not required.

Pros

Form Filler: One of the nicest extra features of this browser is the Quick Fill Form Filler, which goes above and beyond Chrome’s password manager to include all kinds of data entered into various form fields. With this tool, you can complete all kinds of online forms with just a few clicks, and you’ll never have to worry about typing out the same information over and over again.

Chrome compatibility: This browser supports all extensions designed to work with Chrome, so you’ll always have access to all software you’ve used before. You can also log in to your Google account to sync all of your Chrome bookmarks and other info, which lets you get right back to surfing without missing a beat.

Cons

Uneven loading: We did encounter some issues with page loading times during testing. When it worked smoothly, Slimjet had loading times right in line with those of Chrome, but it did have some significant slowdowns as well.

Bottom Line

Slimjet is a well-designed and well-executed alternative browser. Anyone who likes Chrome will enjoy the browsing experience it provides as well as the additional features it integrates. It’s also completely free, so there’s no reason not to take it for a test drive to see what you think.
