CopyClip lets you manage and access your clipboard. We’ll cut to the chase — the app is easy to use and gets the job done.

Pros

Easy to use: There’s really not much to using CopyClip. When you cut or copy text, the text is added to the app where you can access it at any time.

Saves clippings even after closing: CopyClip saves clipped items until you clear them. We closed out of the app and reopened, and our previous clipped items were still there.

Blacklist applications: CopyClip lets you exclude specific apps from having copies or cuts recorded. Just visit the Exceptions feature and check off on the applications you want to blacklist. You can still copy and cut items to paste instantly; they just won’t be available on CopyClip for later use.

Cons

Faulty help: CopyClip has a button in its About section that is supposed to take you to an FAQ, but clicking it took us nowhere. The same for the Fan Page, Twitter, and publisher website buttons.

Bottom Line

CopyClip has a basic job, and it does it well. It’s a helpful app for managing your clipboard and increasing your productivity. It’ll appeal to users of all levels.

Memory Clean is an app for cleaning up your Mac OS X device memory at intervals. Memory Clean is available from the App Store or several download sites, and installs easily. Memory Clean is a free app.

Memory Clean is meant to be run after using memory-intensive applications or games, which can fragment the blocks of free memory in your system. Fragmented memory can lead to degraded performance. Memory Clean does not work continuously, but whenever you launch it. A nice touch is an interface that shows you the amount of free memory you had before running Memory Clean as well as after. In some cases the result can be dramatic. For example when a game we were playing terminated, it kept blocks of memory reserved for no reason. Running Memory Clean freed up almost 1GB of RAM for other applications. There are settings that let you automatically run Memory Clean when free memory drops below a preset threshold, or on demand when you exit an app.

Memory Clean is one of those handy utilities that you don’t realize you need until you’ve seen it work a few times. In our testing Memory Clean worked well and gave us no issues. This will become a necessary app on all our MacBooks and iMacs.

Battery Health is, as its name implies, designed to tell you about your MacBook’s battery, including current capacity and current charge level. Since battery health is an important factor for many of us on the move, knowing how healthy our battery is and how long we can depend on it can help prevent losing power when you need it most. Knowing when it is going to need replacing is also a handy piece of knowledge.

Battery Health is a small utility that installs quickly and easily. When launched the first time, Battery Health asks if you want to run it at startup each time (a good idea). The interface is straightforward. A small dialog window shows the current charge level, total battery capacity (both original and current in mAh), the amount of time remaining on battery power at current draw levels and with some typical apps running, as well as some specifications about the battery (including age, number of deep cycles, power usage, and temperature). A little graph at the bottom shows ongoing usage. The predicted usage is pretty accurate. For example, on our system Battery Health predicted just over 6 hours of battery life playing music, and our MacBook Pro got within 4 percent of that prediction.

Battery Health is one of those useful little apps that you probably won’t use every day, but when you do need it, you’ll find it gives you all the relevant information with nothing superfluous added. By continually monitoring your battery, you can avoid expensive battery replacements and get a good feel for expected battery life on a charge, something that can be handy information to possess.

MenuTab for Facebook eliminates the need for another tab in the browser by providing widgetlike access to the popular social network. Its uncluttered interface is similar to Facebook’s iOS app and will be familiar to those who own an iPhone. Its handy features such as alerts and notifications make it a useful app — if we ignore some of the bugs — for anyone who likes prompt reactions on social media.

Facebook for iPhone users will be greeted by a familiar interface when they log in to MenuTab for Facebook on their Mac. We can say that if you leave the window at its default size, it’ll be similar to playing on your iPhone. Its notification options are handy, and there are two choices: sound or visual notification. We found the custom refresh rate useful as well. However, there are a couple of drawbacks too: although it sits quietly in the Menu bar, the app displays ads at the bottom, which can be eliminated only by an in-app purchase. Users can eliminate ads in their browsers by using different free ad blocker add-ons.

We liked the fact that MenuTab makes Facebook tools available: users can update their status, upload a photo, or check in, just as on an iPhone. For non-iOS users, the interface is very intuitive; the icons give clear hints what command you’ve hit, so the learning curve is very favorable. What we couldn’t understand was why as soon as we chose to upload an image, the interface suddenly changed to the browser-like Facebook view, so the small, 430-pixel-wide window could only capture a small part of the interface.

Overall, the app performed very well, and the default window is exactly what users need to browse the news feed. MenuTab is a useful little app that saves time for Facebook users when checking whether someone commented on their photo or status, yet the bugs can be annoying.

NotesTab is an app that lets you write notes, just like Notes, but extends the functionality to allow sharing and some other cool features. NotesTab installs easily and sits in your menu bar. Whenever you need to scribble a note you just click on the icon and a notebook opens. As you type a note, it is saved immediately, removing the need to hit a Save button.

NotesTab has quite a few configurable options, such as the ability to customize hot keys and always be visible and on top of other apps. This lets you use it as a big copy and paste buffer. You can time stamp each note, and search through your notes easily. The Share feature is nice: you can send the contents of a note to your e-mail client with a single click, then send the contents of your note to anyone else as the body of an e-mail. The NotesTab interface is clean and easy to work with.

Once you get used to NotesTab we doubt you’ll return to Notes. Since NotesTab is free there’s no reason not to install and use it. There’s no paid upgrade version: what you get is the entire app, for free. This, and the features built in, make NotesTab a great app.

RSS Bot for Mac lets you easily track and filter news from multiple Web sites right from your menu bar. Its easy-to-use interface and functionality make it a good option for those looking for a reliable newsfeed reader.

The free application downloads easily from the App Store, installing directly into the Applications folder. Its main menu is basic, but intuitive. Clearly-labeled buttons allow the user to select between the feed menu and one for options. The main feed menu includes plus and minus buttons where users can add and subtract RSS feeds. Adding feeds is easy and only requires pasting a link into the program. These can also be added in a drop-down menu along the top of the screen. The options menu allows synching with outside applications and changing alerts for new stories. In terms of the stories, themselves, RSS Bot for Mac does a good job of listing them in a way that users can see, easily. Updates can also be run manually, or on a schedule.

Since Google Reader will no longer be supported, there is a great need for new newsfeed applications. RSS Bot for Mac works well and would be a good solution for those looking for a functional and easy-to-use application for following newsfeeds.
