A new interface kicks off TurboZip 8, a reliable compression alternative to WinZip. The easy-to-use archiving tool now supports an even wider range of formats, including 7Z, MS Office 2007 archives, ISO, and BZIP. Two new features make it worth considering: the robust preview feature that makes peering into archived files much simpler, and the Auto Compress Script, which allows you to build new archives based on predetermined criteria.

The preview window can show the contents of not just JPEG and DOC files, but MSI, EXE, and others. It’s also blazingly fast, and previewed large files without delay. A new thumbnail preview option and slider enables a more visual representation of your file contents, perfect for pictures but also scalable for documents and HTML. The Auto Compress Script utilizes the same creation Wizard as the Create Zip, and the continuity makes learning how to do it dead simple.

TurboZip no longer requires personal information to be submitted before installing the trial, but it does opt users in to installing TurboZip Express. This can be opted out of. The interface could be better optimized, but the triple-pane mode should feel familiar to most users. It’s not hard to navigate, even if it feels a little unpolished compared with the company logo at the bottom. Any level of users will find TurboZip a handy and simple compression program to add to their system’s toolbox.

Most utilities that promise to clean, tweak, and protect your PC share a shortcoming: they do too much and too little. They give users little control over the sweeping changes they make, sometimes disastrously. WinSettings Pro from FileStream offers plenty of control, but it requires more knowledge and effort than the “all-in-one” tools. However, that’s precisely why we recommend it over the free and cheap alternatives.

WinSettings Pro’s primary access point is an icon in the Notification Area, aka system tray. The program’s stylishly skinned interface and Windows-style layout is anchored by the Group Bar, a left-hand console panel labeled with the program’s primary functions: Cleanup, with 10 separate system cleaning tools; Registry, with around 20 tools; and Desktop, which includes customization features such as wallpaper and background music as well as a screencapture tool. We sampled the Backup, Restore Point, Clean Up Track, Remove Junk Files, Remove Startup, and File Association tools, among others; each had an impressive number of options and settings. Next we clicked Remove Duplicate Files to test WinSettings Pro’s ability to weed through our digital snapshots, which are so badly organized they might as well be in a shoebox. We selected a drive, navigated to our Pictures library, added a folder to the Exclude list, selected the check boxes for our Compare Options, and clicked Scan. After a thorough scan, WinSettings Pro identified far more duplicates than we’d expected to see, with the option to select items to move to the Recycle Bin or delete permanently. The Desktop section has a neat Notification Icon tool that we used to add system tray icon for system tools such as SysConfig and the MMC as well as WinSettings Pro’s various tools. The Wallpaper and Screensaver features didn’t seem to add much to the built-in features in recent Windows releases, but the screencapture tool is much more versatile than the Windows snipping tool, with 16 capture options. WinSettings Pro also offers extensive statistics and reporting tools as well as passwords and other protections.

We’ve barely scratched the surface of the useful features WinSettings Pro packs, such as Windows and Internet tweaks, special folders and names, adding items to context menus, and editing restrictions. WinSettings Pro has something for everybody, but it’s not for everybody; users who know something about their systems will get much more out of it than those who are less experienced.

Although it’s billed as a photo editor, FileStream’s Image Broadway does a lot more than touch up your photos. A recent (and steep) price cut makes Image Broadway a more affordable alternative to Adobe’s Photoshop Elements, but it does have a few drawbacks. You can try Image Broadway (with limits) for free.

Pros

Lots of tools: Image Broadway isn’t just a photo retoucher; it’s a full-featured graphics editor with drawing, painting, filters, effects, layers, paths, and more.

Familiar face: Like most graphics editors, Image Broadway’s layout and tools resemble Photoshop’s but with its own touches, such as the expandable right sidebars.

Easy to learn: A good Help file illustrated with examples makes Image Broadway easy to pick up.

Cons

Tool issues: Some tools didn’t work as promised. For instance, we couldn’t use the Lasso tool to drag copied selections on the image, even with our Wacom pen and tablet.

Onscreen instruction is lacking: Despite the good Help file, the descriptions for the tools explain only how to use them: “Design Brush: Click and drag.” It would be better to describe what they do.

Bottom Line

Image Broadway is an affordable alternative to Photoshop and its many imitators. Though a reduced price makes Image Broadway more attractive, it faces stiff competition from freeware graphics tools, so try before you buy.

Turbo Browser is an intuitive photo-editing and file management tool. It combines two features we don’t usually see together–a basic image editor along with a file browser and organizer–which sets it apart from other similar programs.

Turbo Browser’s interface is basic and looks a lot like Windows Explorer. There are panes to display folders, the names of files within the folders, and previews of the files of themselves. We loved being able to preview not only images, but also Word documents, PDFs, and other files without opening their respective programs; this is a really valuable tool to have when trying to organize documents. The program also contains a basic HTML editor and FTP capabilities, allowing users to easily tweak and upload Web pages. The program’s image editor isn’t going to win any awards, but it does contain basic features such as cropping and rotation, as well as adjustments for color, brightness, blur, and so on. The program’s Help file isn’t terribly detailed, but it’s adequate. Overall, the program isn’t well suited for people who need to do anything intensively, be it photo editing or Web site creation. But it is a fantastic choice for users who find themselves needing a lightweight way to occasionally complete basic tasks. Our only serious disappointment was that the program does not seem to allow image conversion from one file type to another, which would have been helpful.

Turbo Browser has a 30-day trial period. It installs politely but leaves a folder behind upon removal. We recommend this program to all users.
