FastStone Photo Resizer 3.2 makes quick work of batches of digital snapshots. It not only resizes and renames images quickly and with minimal fuss, but it also crops, rotates, adjusts, and edits your pictures, too, and even applies text and watermarks. It has everything you need to take those huge folders of megabyte snapshots with cryptic names and, in one step, convert them all to JPEGS (or whatever), resize them to manageable dimensions, and rename them all, even sequentially (such as: RoadTripAug2012_1). It’s better than Plan B, which is to just forget about them and then spend hours finding, sorting, and converting them to post and share. We have a lot of experience with Plan B, so it was nice to see how easy Plan A was with help from this basic but effective tool. Something else we like about FastStone Photo Resizer 3.2: it’s freeware.

We like FastStone Photo Resizer’s businesslike user interface, too. It has a familiar layout: Select photos, individually or in batches, on the left-hand tree view, and click “Add” to add them to Photo Resizer’s right-hand Input List. A small, optional preview pane is nice but not really enough to distinguish between two very similar images, although that’s not uncommon in tools of this sort. Then choose a destination, output format, and other options and press Convert. Advanced Options let us rename files from the Batch Convert tab, though not with as many options as the Batch Rename tab. It’s sufficient for quick jobs, as we found out when we resized and renamed a batch of wallpaper. The Batch Rename tab’s templates let us rename our files with complex sequences. While the standard interface offers options such as lower and upper case and Ask before overwrite, clicking Advanced Options opened a dialog with ten tabs of extra settings as well as text and watermarking tools.

FastStone Photo Resizer 3.2 does so much so well that we think it belongs at the top of any list of photo editors for Windows — not just the free ones.

We admit that one of the reasons we don’t post more photos on the Internet is that we are just plain lazy when it comes to uploading and editing our images. We connect the camera, we wait for the editing software to load, we futz around with unintuitive menus and functions–even basic resizing and cropping is a hassle. Fortunately for us, now there’s FastStone Maxview. This basic photo viewer and editor allows users to make quick, simple adjustments to their photos. Photoshop this is not, but for quick, basic edits, the program is great.

The program’s interface is simple and fairly intuitive. Users open photos and are then able to make a variety of basic changes, including rotating, resizing, cropping, and adjusting to lightness, saturation, hue, and RGB levels. The program also allows users to view their photos as a slideshow to which music can be added. More experienced users will appreciate a variety of more-advanced settings, including adjustments to facilitate the handling of raw images and the option to enable CMS. All of the program’s features are easy to use, and we like how quickly the program loads and functions. This is a great choice both for novice users who get overwhelmed by having too many features and more experienced users who are looking for ease of use over power.

FastStone Maxview has a 45-day trial period. It installs desktop icons without asking but uninstalls cleanly. We recommend this program to all users seeking a quick and simple way to edit their photos.

Despite its name, FastStone Image Viewer is more than just a program for viewing images. It’s also capable of performing a fairly significant number of editing functions, which come packaged in an innovative interface. It’s no Photoshop replacement, but we think it’s a good choice if you need a way to view images and perform basic editing and correction tasks.

At first glance, the program’s interface is a bit cluttered; there are toolbars with lots of buttons across the top, and there are panes where you can navigate to particular directories, view thumbnails of the contents, and view larger previews of individual images. The cool part of FastStone Image Viewer appears when you enter full-screen mode; the image is displayed by itself, but moving your mouse to the edges of the screen brings up a variety of tools and options.

Mouse to the right and the image’s metadata appears; to the left, a menu appears with tools for rotating, resizing, and adding text, as well as adjusting colors and adding special effects. Mousing to the top of the screen brings down a thumbnail preview of the current directory, making it easy to select a different image, while at the bottom of the screen there’s a toolbar with some of the most basic editing options. We especially liked the program’s slideshow feature, which makes it easy to create custom slideshows using your own music.

Although most users should be able to figure FastStone’s features out without much assistance, there’s a 95-page PDF Help file that offers plenty of guidance. Overall, we were impressed with the variety of features that FastStone Image Viewer combines in an easy-to-use package, and we recommend the program to anyone seeking a basic but well-stocked image editor.

FastStone Capture addresses the shortcomings common to screen-capture programs, and it packages the features and options you need in an easy-to-use interface that simplifies the most cumbersome tasks, including selecting just the parts you want to save, resizing and editing the image, selecting the file format and destination, writing captions, and naming and organizing the final results.

FastStone Capture’s primary interface is a small floating task bar with a handful of easy-to-understand icons that activate the program’s various methods of capturing screen images: active window, object, rectangle, freehand, full screen, scrolling window, and, for video capture, a screen recorder. Two other buttons select output options and program settings. The program also installs icons on the desktop and system tray. Clicking on an image in any of the capture modes opens the FastStone Editor, a speedy but basic image editor that has some drawing, painting, and effects capabilities. The ability to quickly and easily write and attach captions may be the standout feature. We also like the screen recorder for capturing onscreen video while preserving the context.

FastStone Capture functions quickly, smoothly, and unobtrusively. It downloads, installs, and opens without issues, and, should you decide not to keep it, it uninstalls cleanly without leaving behind any orphan files or folders. FastStone Capture is shareware; it’s free to use for 30 days, after which you must purchase and register your copy. We recommend it for all user levels.

FastStone Image Viewer Portable is a full-featured image-handling application that happens to be totally portable and totally free. It’s an image file browser, editor, and converter that bundles the most useful editing tools, such as red-eye removal, lossless rotation, resizing, and color adjustment, as well as various effects, text, captions, and frames. It creates self-running slideshows, photo contact sheets, wallpaper, and other displays; downloads digital photos; converts, renames, and changes the attributes of batches of files; changes time stamps; compares images; splits and combines files; captures screen images; e-mails images; and a lot more.

FastStone Image Viewer’s fully customizable interface can also be reskinned for a new look. It’s packed with controls but it never felt too busy, with colorful, logically grouped icons that displayed labels when we hovered our cursor over them. The program scanned our system and displayed a tree view, from which we selected some folders of images. FastStone populated the main view with thumbnails and opened a preview pane beneath the left-hand navigation tree’s panel. We sampled the program’s various tools and effects, all of which worked as expected, and then sampled the Create menu, opening the slideshow wizard. Using this, we quickly created a 12MB self-running slideshow out of two folders of images totaling nearly 50MB on the disk, with transition effects, though we skipped the optional music track. We could play the slideshow in a full-screen view that displayed useful information like EXIF data and editing options when we rolled the cursor to the right or left edge of the screen. The Image Strip Builder is an interesting wizard for creating strips of images, such as a filmstrip or an animation sequence. It’s easy to overlook the lossless JPEG rotator, but it preserves image quality when you rotate images, something a surprising number of tools can’t do.

We were mighty impressed with FastStone Image Viewer Portable as a comprehensive image manager that can go head to head with some expensive competition, but even more that it’s totally portable and not too big to fit on a flash drive. It’s a keeper.
