TouchPad Calculator carves through multiple math problems at once, giving you a better way to handle a given set of numbers. It lets you edit any part of a complicated problem thanks to its useful list view. While it may not have as many advanced features as handheld calculators made for mathletes, it should be more than enough for most people.

Instead of giving you the traditional narrow screen of a regular calculator, this application maps out every operation you give it on a handy list. That makes it easy to change a single element of a longer problem without having to type the whole thing in again. It sports a colorful layout that organizes the buttons, but you can’t customize the colors, themselves. TouchPad Calculator can handle basic division, multiplication, addition, and subtraction, but it doesn’t offer exponents, square roots, or other advanced features students might require. It does offer measures of central tendency, though. The app gives you the ability to save and print any calculations so you can use them going forward, as well.

TouchPad Calculator outclasses the default calculator on Windows on so many different levels. It saves you plenty of frustration since it lets you change any formula without having to start from scratch. That’s more than enough to win people’s respect, even if it doesn’t do enough to please college students and others who might need a graphing calculator.

Batch File Renamer from Ezyware is, as its name suggests, a batch file renamer, a utility that can quickly and easily change the name, order, and attributes of files and folders, either singly or in large batches; in this case, up to a million files at once. It can sort file names by name, date, and time, and it previews all changes before making them. It’s very small, totally portable, and free, too.

We noted that Batch File Renamer is portable, requiring no formal installation: just click the program file, and it runs. The user interface is a compact, efficient job with a single window displaying customizable fields: Dates, Source Filenames, Destination Filenames, Size, and so on. The scrolling tree view for browsing to the source destination is a bit awkward; a standard file-browsing dialog would be an improvement. We selected LowerCase in the Generate Destination File Names entry field and clicked Generate. Next we entered what we wanted to replace and what to replace it with, selected the File Attributes from a handy check box on the interface, and clicked Replace, which previewed the changes in the destination field. We clicked Start Renaming, and the program quickly did the deed, as we verified by opening the folder to see the changes for ourselves. Batch File Renamer offers a Command Line prompt with CMD and Execute buttons at the bottom of the interface; this option should appeal to system admins and the hard-core, old-school types out there.

If you’ve got a digital camera, song collection, or just a bunch of files you’d like to rename or reorder, but you dread going in and doing it all one file at a time, you need a tool like Batch File Rename.

With this software, you won’t have to worry about getting the lighting just right when you take a photo, as you can just go back and adjust the settings later on.

Pros

Lots of options: Photo Filter Factory offers all kinds of filters to let you give your photos whatever look and feel you’d like. There is also a separate Tools window that you can move around your screen to keep your workspace free of clutter while still having everything close at hand. And you don’t have to worry about what format your photo is in, either, as BMP, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and many more are all supported.

Batch Processing: If you have a bunch of photos you want to apply a certain set of changes to, you can do it all at once through this app’s Batch Processing feature. This can save you plenty of time and energy, and it ensures that your photos will all turn out just the way you want them.

Cons

Help mode: Rather than a Help document, Photo Filter Factory features a Help mode. When you switch into this, you can hover your cursor over any element of the interface and a description of it will appear in a separate window. However, it can be a little tedious having to switch back and forth from one mode to another when you’re trying to work, and the descriptions are often just a couple of words and don’t provide any detailed information about how best to go about using the software.

Unable to open images: We also had trouble getting the app to open images from our computer during testing. Some attempts were successful, but others elicited no response at all.

Bottom Line

Photo Filter Factory offers a lot of handy features, but there are also some serious bugs.
