There’s no shortage of registry cleaning tools, most of which offer free system scans that promise to boost your PC’s performance, but only if you buy something. Many do more harm than good if you’re not careful about how you use them. Then there’s Eusing Free Registry Defrag, a free tool that cleans up the Windows Registry by removing blank spaces left behind by daily computing and when you add and remove software. Compacting the registry saves RAM, reducing boot and shutdown times and improving overall performance. Free Registry Defrag doesn’t change the contents of the registry in any way; it just minimizes the registry hives.

While Free Registry Defrag is definitely free to download and use, you have the option of free registration to get updates, contribute usage data, and participate in the user community. You can also contribute a translation, if you know a language that isn’t already in the program’s extensive list of choices. The user interface is a simple gray dialog with a few basic controls, notably Analyze and Defragment, but there are also choices for Options, Language, and Help. Since this tool doesn’t make any changes to the registry itself but merely deletes blank spaces, it lacks the selection check boxes typical of actual registry “cleaners.” It very quickly analyzed and compacted the registry on test machines running both Windows XP and Windows 7, reclaiming several thousand kilobytes of territory on each and displaying the results with before-and-after capacities in the space below the registry display. That doesn’t sound like much in an age of terabyte disks, but it’s a lot of real estate in the registry, and a lot less ground for the system to cover with RAM.

We’ve tried tons of registry cleaners yet recommended few and kept fewer still. Eusing Free Registry Defrag is a different story, though. It’s fast and effective, and it does no harm. Used regularly, it can help you optimize your system’s resources.

The publishers description for this download manager is a bit deceiving. It doesn’t actually let you watch videos, it only downloads them. But still, it worked well enough for us.

Free YouTube Video Download opens a basic, but functional user interface. You won’t find a Help feature with the program, but one isn’t needed. Its very easy to navigate. There’s a field for the video link, a field for the output folder, which is found using the browse button. The interface also gives you the option of downloading the video from YouTube or using a cache file address. Switching to batch mode allows you to download multiple URLs. When we visited YouTube and copied a video link, it was automatically pasted into the programs video URL field. It saved us the trouble of switching back and forth between screens. We chose our output folder, and put the program to work. Our video was quickly downloaded from YouTube as an FLV file and save to our specified location. The batch feature also let us quickly download multiple video files simultaneously.

This video downloader is easy enough for the most novice user to understand, and its freeware status makes it worth a try.

Free Internet Window Washer is yet another contender in the browsing-privacy category, but its spotty performance and lack of navigational flow left a lot to be desired.

The user interface is bland in appearance, but simple enough to understand. However, the commands along the left side of the small window aren’t in the most logical order. The result is an interface that lacks any kind of flow, making it difficult to know where to go next. Regardless, using the Wash Settings menu, we were able to check off the cleaning options we wanted to include in the wipe process. The program does extend its cleaning functionality to Netscape, Opera, and Firefox in addition to Internet Explorer. It also lets you schedule cleanings using preset increments. But it all proved pointless because while the program successfully emptied our Recycle Bin and cleared any temporary files, it failed to clear our IE browsing history. A tally at the bottom of the interface lets you know the total number of items and space to be washed, but we found it inaccurate when compared with its actual performance.

The program offers a Help menu, but it doesn’t make up for the poorly designed user interface and unreliable performance. We recommend you skip this free program for a more functional browsing-privacy tool.

Eusing Free Registry Cleaner provides safe and quick registry maintenance for Windows computers. This program comes with its own installer and supports many languages. The overall performance is satisfactory but the user interface could use some improvement.

Eusing Free Registry Cleaner features a basic interface divided into three sections–tasks, selections to scan, and the output window. You can choose to scan the entire registry or just portions of the registry that you feel are causing problems. Some areas of the registry that can be scanned on an individual basis are empty keys, applications, shortcuts, and other key areas. The scan gives you a list of keys that have errors as it finds them. You can peruse the list during the scan. One problem with this program is that since there are typically many registry keys that need to be repaired, there is no mechanism to search for specific keys so that you can further narrow your repair. Instead, you must manually scroll down the key list and decide which ones will be repaired and which ones will be left alone.

Eusing Free Registry Cleaner belongs to “safe” registry cleaners because it allows the user to back up the old registry and windows, as well as create a restore point. If you do these things, you will be protected even if you choose the wrong registry keys to repair. Novice and expert users can easily use this program, although novice users should take care with any app that impacts the registry.

This freebie CD ripping software might not be the speediest on the scene, but conversion to MP3 audio files gives it a boost.

If you opt for MP3, you may wait around longer than you’d like, as the program first extracts songs to temporary WAV files before converting them to the compressed codec. In our tests, the application had no trouble obtaining track information from the Internet. As you might expect, the program lets you set the bit rate and use VBR compression, but the ability to normalize tracks is a welcome surprise. Ditto for the audio-conversion and recording tools, which are quite basic but still work just fine.

Note that when converting files to MP3 or WAV formats, you won’t actually see them show up in a queue, though you can still process tunes in batch mode. The utility can also now compress WAV files into the OGG format. In the end, this piece of freeware makes a strong case for itself.
