Research has shown that frequent use of a computer mouse may contribute to repetitive motion injuries. KeyCue for Mac claims to teach users how to replace the mouse with keyboard shortcuts, but its limited functionality and its price make it less useful than it could have been.

A 30-day free trial version of KeyCue for Mac is available, but it costs $29.99 for the full version. The program downloads quickly but despite having its own installer, proved difficult to set up. We had to try the installation several times due to the program claiming it could not install while it was open. This was a strange error since the installer was the only version of it running at the time. In addition to having to activate keyboard assist in the control panel, the program prompts the user to sign in to all network computers not only during the installation, but throughout its operation. Ergonis Software offers support by e-mail, but we didn’t try this. As for the program itself, the only evidence that it was running was a small icon at the top of the Mac screen. Clicking the icon brought up a keyboard shortcut list, but any additional functions were not obvious. Instructions would have been helpful since any additional features were not apparent from cycling through the options.

While KeyCue for Mac lists keyboard shortcuts in an easy-to-see way, its full version price and failure to provide additional features make it less attractive.

PopChar X for Mac is a utility program that quickly lets you access all kinds of special characters and allows for the convenient addition of them to any document. No matter what font you’re using or which character you need, you’ll find it quickly inside this handy app.

Pros

Accessibility: You can access this app at any time by clicking the tiny P icon in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. There is also an option to configure a hot key if you prefer, making it easy to access all of the special characters contained in this app at any time.

Favorites List: You can add any characters you use with regularity to your Favorites List for even quicker access. Creating this list is straightforward, and it means you won’t have to search through all kinds of other characters to find the ones you’re looking for.

Font options: This program will auto-detect the fonts you’re using so you can find the available special characters quickly. You can also use it to do a reverse search to determine which fonts support a certain character so you know which one to use ahead of time.

Cons

Data overload: There is a lot in this app, and for new users especially, it can be a bit overwhelming. Once you get the hang of the interface and start using some of the characters, it will become more manageable, though.

Bottom Line

PopChar X makes it very convenient to access all kinds of special characters, no matter what type of document you’re working on. The Favorites List means you can find what you’re looking for quickly, and the ability to set hot keys gives quick access to all program features. The app is free to try with some characters disabled, and it costs $39.99 to buy.
