You can scan your PC with EMCO Malware Destroyer fairly easily, and the tool is offered free of charge. But you’ll need to contend with a somewhat muddled interface and a lack of direction within the software.

Pros

Quick scans: In less than a minute, EMCO Malware Destroyer completed a scan of our PC. It didn’t turn up any issues, though, so we weren’t able to test the Remove Detected Threats option.

Cons

Odd layout: The interface is a bit of a mess, with tabs used when buttons would suffice (and vice versa) and font choices that make labels sometimes hard to read. It’s arranged in tabs, starting with Scanning Management, and the biggest button is labeled Scan Wizard. There’re only two choices, though — your PC or a remote PC — so it’s not much of a wizard, since the scan starts as soon as you select one of those options. The good thing is that it’s fairly easy to initiate a scan, but with no in-program Help file, it takes some playing around to figure out what’s in each tab.

Tons of settings: In another tabbed window, there are six settings options, and two have even more layers of tabs. It’s generally easy to change a setting with the radio button, but the sheer number of them could intimidate some users.

Bottom Line

EMCO Malware Destroyer is free to try, and the scans are quick. If you want a tool to supplement your other security software, you’ll lose nothing by trying ECMO Malware Destroyer, but we suggest you try other freeware options before committing to this one.

Two questions: 1) Have you ever tried to delete or rename a file or folder, only to have your own PC tell you no, you can’t do that because it’s locked by another program or process? 2) Don’t you have enough frustration in your life without software piling on? EMCO UnLock IT takes care of Question 2 by dealing with Question 1. It’s freeware that can unlock files and folders that are locked by system processes or other programs when you receive an Access Denied error message. It does this by attempting to close any processes and services locking a resource or, if that doesn’t work, prompting the user to terminate the process holding the resource hostage. That’s handy if you’re not sure where the file system fender-bender happened, but EMCO UnLock IT can save time by unlocking resources more quickly than you can do by the usual step-intensive methods. It can also terminate viruses, Trojans, and other hard-to-kill malware.

EMCO UnLock IT’s attractive, colorful interface offers many skin choices via a skin chooser button on the upper border as well as the toolbar. The interface sports two tabs, Applications and Actions. We browsed to Program Files under the Applications tab, and UnLock IT displayed all running processes for the directory, their specific locations, and the Process Name and ID, Description, and Executable Path of any process locking the resource. Right-clicking any entry let us choose Close Handles, either All handles or File or Library, as applicable, or Kill All Processes, a more drastic step that prompted a warning message. We could also click Unlock Resource or Kill All Resources on the toolbar, as well as close handles and display process properties sheets via the Actions tab. We intentionally created situations in which we could not open or close a file or folder because it was locked by another application or resource. Normally, we’d track down the issue in Explorer, and UnLock IT offers a Jump to Explorer option, too. But UnLock IT gave a handy central overview that let us quickly free up locked resources. A clear, comprehensive, and detailed Help file answered all our questions.

EMCO UnLock IT simplifies the process of freeing up system resources being held hostage by other processes and applications. It’s a powerful tool that should be used with care, especially when killing processes.

Move, rename, or delete locked files at your next system boot with this effective and easy-to-use freeware utility. EMCO MoveOnBoot’s no frills interface has a combination of a drag-and-drop window and text buttons. It won’t win any design awards, but it makes the app simple to operate. Help is included, but even inexperienced users will have this program mastered in minutes.

It can’t get much easier to work with the locked files. You merely drag the problem file to the interface and the app displays a prompt dialog. Radio buttons list each of the program’s options. Click the action you need performed, and press OK. MoveOnBoot will delete, move, or rename files or folders. The app also offers an easy method to bypass the prompt dialog. If you need to perform the same action on multiple files, you can simply call up a drag-and-drop window for that action and drop all your files there. All it takes to perform the actions is to boot your system.

The interface helpfully lists all actions to be performed on next boot and includes a log of previously performed actions. ECMO MoveOnBoot simplifies a function experienced users find difficult, and it does it in a way that even novices will understand. This is freeware everyone will need at some point, and it’s a good addition to any user’s toolbox.
