Like many of Efficient’s free tools we’ve tested, this is a scaled-back version of more capable shareware with the same basic functionality but leaving out some features, such as the ability to add custom labels and attachments to events. What isn’t missing is the capabilities users need most, not to mention the paid version’s sophisticated, customizable interface choices, full Help options, backup and restore features, and security settings, including password protection. We particularly like the wizardlike pop-up dialogs that simplify setting individual events as well as the clean calendar view that keeps it all together.

This professional-level scheduling tool is freeware that’s certified for Windows 7 and supports 19 languages. With so many capable features that are so easy to use, it’s difficult to see how the same old excuses will cut it when Efficient Reminder is there to keep you on time and on date.

Efficient Address Book’s customizable interface features eight built-in themes that change the color and look of a busy but efficient and familiar Windows-style layout. There’s a full complement of menu items, including a Help file. Searching, adding, and editing contacts, photos, and personal information are all quick and easy to master, befitting a program focused on efficiency. Organizing contacts by company, bulk imports and exports, and file back-up and restore functions all performed flawlessly. We especially like the extra security features, such as password protection and encrypted information storage.

This fully functional freeware omits a few features of the developer’s Address Book Pro. It works in all versions of Windows from 98 to 7. It can help anyone keep their email contacts organized and up to date, but for small businesspeople, its customer management features make it especially attractive. Efficient Address Book Free Portable lets you keep all of your contacts in one place. It also enables you to set up reminders, so you never forget a birthday again. And because this tool is completely portable, you can take it with you and use it on any computer you choose.

Pros

Organization and import options: You can import your entire contact list into this app as long as it is in the form of a comma delimited file, or you can add them manually. Once those contacts are in place, you’ll have quite a few options for organizing them for easy access. For instance, you can create different groups to sort your Work and Personal contacts, and you can even have sub-groups within those groups for further clarity.

Portability: Since this is the portable version of the app, you can transfer it completely to a USB drive and take it with you wherever you go. That means you’ll never be without all of your contacts, and changing computers doesn’t mean you have to put all of that information together again.

Cons

Convoluted Help: The Help document that comes with this app, while extensive, isn’t very clear in its descriptions. This isn’t a huge drawback, since most features are clearly accessible anyway. But it could be a problem for those with less computer experience.

Bottom Line

Efficient Address Book Free Portable is a handy tool to have at your disposal. It lets you keep all of your contact information organized the way you want to, and because you can carry it on a portable drive, you never have to worry about being without all of that information.

Efficient Diary is an attractive diary application that lets you record and organize diary entries in a variety of ways. The program’s sleek design and useful features give it a definite edge over the traditional paper diary or alternatives like password-protected Word documents.

The program’s interface is well organized and nice to look at, resembling the familiar Microsoft Outlook, and the built-in Help file is well written and thorough. You can customize your diary entries with a full range of colors, fonts, sizes, and effects. You can also insert images and attach documents to diary entries. You can select a header from a drop-down menu that reflects either your mood or the current weather. Entries can be organized into user-defined groups that are fully searchable, making it easy to find specific items from the past. We like that you can change the program’s color scheme, allowing for a bit of personalization, and password protection certainly beats the old locking book cover of days past. Overall, we found Efficient Diary quite easy and pleasurable to use, both when it came to writing entries and managing them. The program isn’t particularly heavy on features, but it offers all the important ones, and we can’t think of glaring omissions. It’s true that it doesn’t support audio or video entries, which seem to be growing in popularity, but for a text-based diary, it’s a great choice.

Efficient Calendar Free is an attractive scheduling application that lets users to keep track of events, appointments, holidays, and more. If you’re looking for a stand-alone calendar that’s not integrated with your e-mail or other online activities, Efficient Calendar Free is a great option.

The program’s interface is sleek and highly reminiscent of more recent versions of Microsoft Outlook. In fact, we’d be hard pressed to identify any ways that Efficient Calendar Free differs significantly from the calendar functions of Outlook, aside from the fact that it doesn’t appear that this program can be used interactively by multiple users (no inviting other users to meetings). We liked that users can choose from eight different color schemes, allowing a bit of interface customization. The navigation pane can also be customized to show only the buttons that the user specifies. The built-in Help file is thorough and well written.

Efficient Calendar Free does all of the usual things you’d expect from a calendar and scheduler. Users can schedule reminders, set tasks and mark their progress, and make entries in both daily and monthly calendars. We like that Efficient Calendar Free lets you import holidays from several different English-speaking countries. You can even customize which holidays are imported. Overall, there’s nothing really spectacular about this scheduler, but it’s attractive and intuitive, and we didn’t find anything about it that rubbed us the wrong way.

Some people can get by with writing notes to themselves on scraps of paper, but others need a way of keeping track of their to-do lists that offers a little more organization and structure. Efficient To-Do List Free is a simple, attractive way to stay on top of all of your tasks, from appointments and meetings to long-term projects.

The program’s interface is attractive and well-designed, reminding us a lot of newer versions of Microsoft Outlook. It’s easy to create new tasks, and users can specify start dates, due dates, priority levels, and recurrence. For tasks that are ongoing, users can mark the status (not started, in progress, and so on) and what percentage of the task is complete. You can minimize the program to the taskbar, keeping it out of the way but easily accessible; this way users can keep the program running and receive its reminders when a task is coming up. Although the program doesn’t seem to have any features that would allow it to sync with other instances of itself or other to-do list utilities, users can export their tasks as either CSV or HTML files, making them somewhat portable. The built-in Help file is brief but adequate. Overall, Efficient To-Do List didn’t totally knock our socks off, but we think it’s a nice way to manage to-do lists without a lot of fuss.
