Easeus Data Recovery Wizard Free Edition recovers deleted files, even if you’ve emptied the Recycling Bin or deleted them directly (and provided they haven’t been securely deleted with multiple passes). It can recover data from your hard drive, USB drives, memory cards, and other storage devices. It’s compatible with dynamic disks and all Windows file systems, from FAT to NTFS and EXT, and it can skip bad sectors automatically for quicker scanning. Easeus Data Recovery Wizard is fully functional freeware with a 1GB recovery limit that serves as a trial for a paid upgrade. The latest version of Easeus Data Recovery Wizard Free Edition sports an improved user interface and Windows 8 compatibility.

True to its name, Easeus Data Recovery Wizard is a wizard-based utility, starting with three simple choices: Deleted File Recovery, Complete Recovery, and Partition Recovery. It has an excellent Help file, too. It’s easy to see the program in action; if you don’t have files to recover, make some. That’s what we did, copying data from a USB drive, deleting it, and emptying the Recycle Bin before starting the Deleted File Recovery Wizard.

The tool’s first screen let us search for a lost file automatically or by file type and also opt to ignore bad sectors. Easeus Data Recovery Wizard quickly found the files in automatic mode, displaying its results in a separate, tabbed File Preview window. We selected the files we wanted to recover and pressed Next. We chose an output directory from a screen that displayed available drive capacity — a nice touch. The recovery operation finished almost immediately. We clicked on the drive link in the notification screen, and the destination folder opened with our recovered data intact and available.

Easeus Data Recovery Wizard Free Edition is a capable performer, even with the 1GB limit. Most users probably want to recover a specific piece of data, like a file or folder that was deleted accidentally. If you’ve deleted something you meant to keep, try the free tool first. If you need more, you don’t have to download or scan your system again but can upgrade Easeus Data Recovery Wizard in place.

EaseUS Todo Backup Free lets you create backups of your important files or your entire computer through its streamlined interface. Just choose the type of backup you’d like to create to get started, and let the program do the rest.

Pros

Backup options: There are several different options for creating a backup through this program. These include Disk/Partition Backup, File Backup, System Backup, and Smart Backup. You can also clone your hard drive in the event that you have to switch it out for a new one. You can also specify whether you want to recover your files to the original location or a separate recovery location, and whether or not you want to replace existing files.

File monitoring: This app allows you to set up a schedule for the program to monitor certain files through the Smart Backup feature. Every time modifications are detected in the monitored files, the app will automatically create a backup of the new versions, so you never have to worry about losing your latest work.

Cons

Constant nagging: This app is free, but there are frequent pop-ups asking you to upgrade. While some of this is to be expected in a free app, the extent of it in this program seems a little excessive.

Bottom Line

EaseUS Todo Backup Free is a handy tool for backing up some or all of your files as often as you’d like. The Smart Backup is an especially convenient feature, and while the app does bombard you a bit with requests to upgrade, this doesn’t actually impact the effectiveness of the program.

EaseUS MobiSaver Free helps you get back lost files on your iOS device, but it only works if you have the already bloated iTunes installed. Once you have it up and running it works perfectly and it will be especially helpful if your iTunes backup has failed.

Even though EaseUS MobiSaver Free helps you back up your files from an iPhone, iPad, or iPod, you still need to have iTunes to make it work. This program won’t replace that if you own an Apple gadget with a Windows laptop. Like Apple’s own media player, EaseUs MobiSaver Free is a hefty download, checking in at about 60MB. That means it will take a while to download if you have a slower Internet connection. Once you’ve installed the program, it works seamlessly. It automatically backs up any files you tell it to: SMS, contacts, photos, and more. It can even pull files that you accidentally deleted from your gadget, giving you a nice fail-safe if your iTunes backup gave up the ghost. You can host your backup locally, but the app doesn’t come with any online storage. None of that matters much if you’re in a sticky situation, though — and that’s exactly where this app will come in handy.

If you’re panicking because you lost an important contact, photo, or text, you have to give EaseUS MobiSaver Free a shot. It’s a nice backup to your existing iTunes backup, especially considering how fickle iTunes can be. It doesn’t hurt to have a little redundancy, and this program is a great way to do it.

A familiar layout with disk map plus a full User Manual and lots of Help resources make for a great start. Partition Master Free can format, copy, resize, move, and manage disk partitions as proficiently as its premium competitors. It supports removable drives and hardware RAID, too.

Pros

Powerful yet free: Partition Master Free can Resize, Move, Merge, Migrate, and Copy disks or partitions; convert to local, change label, defragment, check and explore partition; and much more. A premium upgrade adds free tech support and the ability to resize dynamic volumes, but the freeware more than meets most home users’ needs.

Wizards: Migrating your OS to an ultra-fast SSD or a new HDD? Or maybe you want to clone or copy a partition? There’s a Wizard for that (and more) on the toolbar. Partition Master Free is SSD-friendly, too.

Business License: Home business owners can obtain a Business License for Partition Master Free with a few clicks.

Cons

Toolbar “extras” and pop-up ads: The data recovery, backup, and bootable CD tools displayed on the toolbar and Advanced menu aren’t available in Partition Master Free. True, occasional pop-up (or slide-in) ads for other EaseUS software can be annoying, but not as annoying as paying!

Bottom Line

In actual use, EaseUS Partition Master Free Edition proved equal or superior to other freeware disk management utilities and quite a few premium ones, too.

A year is a long time in the life of the average PC. If it’s been a while since your computer was brand-spanking-new, you may have noticed that it takes longer to start up, or your programs and files take longer to load. You can reclaim some of your computer’s original performance with the help of EaseUS CleanGenius. This toolkit cleans and tweaks your system, deleting junk files and unneeded registry entries on demand or on schedule. It can make a big difference on older and slower systems, but even newer computers can benefit from regular maintenance with CleanGenius. EaseUS CleanGenius Free is compatible with Windows 8. Several Pro features are disabled, such as the Registry Cleaner and Defragmenter.

CleanGenius uses a colorful dashboard-style interface that takes a glance or two to sort out, though the controls are typical of such tools and won’t be hard to figure out, thanks to clear labels. In addition to three main sections (Privacy Protect, Turbo Boost, and Utilities Box) CleanGenius includes a Memory Manager, Startup Manager, Disk Defragmenter, and Registry Cleaner. The large main button accesses both the Quick Scan and Deep Scan options. Since a full scan is usually the best option when using new system tools, we selected Deep Scan, which uses all the major features but the Registry Cleaner, which isn’t active in the freeware. We deselected the Disk Defragmenter to avoid defragmenting our SSD-based C drive but ran the Junk Files Cleaner, Shortcut Cleaner, Privacy Sweeper, System Optimizer, and Network Optimizer.

The scan was fast and found a range of issues that we could examine in detail before opting to clean. Pressing Clean ran all the tools. Under the Startup Manager, we simply had to uncheck any listed programs to keep them from slowing down our bootups. Under the Options, we could configure which programs the Privacy Protect feature cleans, including our browsers and Windows applications. The Auto Care settings include several automatic modes as well as scheduling. Some users will really appreciate the Network Optimizer’s Dial-up option.

EaseUS CleanGenius Free proved fast, easy to use, and effective at cleaning our Windows PC.
