At one time or another, just about everybody ends up wishing that they could edit a PDF document. Maybe it’s a form that needs to be filled out, or information that needs to be combined with something else in another document. This is a common problem, but many of the programs that are capable of editing PDF files cost hundreds of dollars. DeskUNPDF Standard is an affordable alternative that makes it easy to convert PDF files to editable formats.

The program’s interface is well-designed and intuitive. To convert a file, users simply select the source PDF, choose an output format–the options include Word, OpenOffice, and text documents–and click Convert. The program quickly converts the PDF to the desired editable output format. For users who desire a little more control, there are plenty of optional settings that can be adjusted; users can specify page ranges, margin exclusion, text formatting, and how to handle images. Users can also purchase an OCR add-on that will allow them to scan documents directly to DeskUNPDF and convert them to editable formats. DeskUNPDF comes with a surprisingly detailed PDF User Guide, but we didn’t need to refer to it; everything about the program seemed pretty self-explanatory to us. Overall, we found DeskUNPDF to be incredibly easy to use, and we think it’s a great choice for anyone who needs to edit a PDF file without investing in a program like Adobe Acrobat.

DeskUNPDF installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this program to all users.

Billed as “the ultimate paperless solution,” Docudesk’s deskPDF Studio X is aimed squarely at Adobe Acrobat. Studio X can create PDFs from any application, edit the text and images in any PDF, and convert PDFs to Word, Excel, HTML, and other document types. It can sign, stamp, and add freehand and freetext markup as well as letterheads, watermarks, and other custom touches to your documents. Features like PDFzen integration allows one-click Cloud storage and easy publishing and sharing of documents online via social media, e-mail, and fax, while 256-bit encryption, digital IDs, and other strong security measures keep you and your data safe. Studio X is free to try for 10 days and retails for a nickel less than $60 — much less than a new copy of Acrobat. Studio X v5.0 works in Windows XP to 8 and features a newly-redesigned interface among other additions and improvements.

Installing deskPDF Studio X involves several options, including making it your default PDF viewer and installing deskPDF MSOffice Integration. The program’s redesigned user interface resembles the look of the latest Office apps, including an attractive take on Office’s Ribbon toolbar. This efficient arrangement opens a full-length toolbar of specialized tools and options whenever you click one of Studio X’s 11 tabs (including the Help menu and Activate Trial button). Studio X also follows Office’s lead with File and Home tabs for opening and editing documents. Studio X handled every task with ease in our tests, though we really only scratched the surface of this powerful toolkit’s capabilities. Some notables: The Compact PDF tool lets you shrink documents to optimal size with wizard-like efficiency, OCR scanning is easy, and PDFzen really does upload documents with a single click.

We’ve used Acrobat as well as every kind of PDF freeware, and deskPDF Studio X impressed us with two facts: 1) While free tools can do a lot, there’s no substitute for a competent, full-featured PDF solution; and 2) Software that meets these criteria doesn’t have to be expensive. While Studio X probably can’t replace Acrobat in every situation or environment, it belongs on top of the short list of affordable alternatives.

DeskUNPDF Professional is a sleek-looking program matched by its intuitive and effective interface. This program will have users effortlessly converting their files thanks to its simplicity and direction.

This program has a beautiful design that lives up to its professional billing. With a dark border and a short string of control icons along the top, users will most likely not need the brief tutorial at the start of the program or the User Guide. To convert, users simply choose the Open icon to pick a file. Clicking on the Convert icon next does all the hard work. In between selecting a file and converting it, users are given a wealth of options that manage to enlighten instead of overwhelm. From a small box along the left side, users can choose to convert their file to a DOC, JPEG, XLS or a number of other file formats by simply clicking a radio button and navigating a simple drop-down menu. Files are quickly converted exactly as they appeared in their previous form, and require no annoying cleanup of strange letters or other unwanted material.

Our only turn off to DeskUNPDF was that it didn’t ask us where to store the converted file. However, we found that tiny misstep easy to forgive thanks to the program’s ease. You’re only allowed to convert up to three pages during the trial, but you’ll get a clear picture of how well the program works. There are many PDF conversion programs available for download and this is among the best.

There are any number of utilities out there that can quickly and easily convert a variety of file formats into PDFs, so there’s no reason to settle for one that doesn’t quite meet your needs. DeskPDF Pro combines an efficient drag-and-drop interface with some useful features, but the limitations of the trial version are significant, and there are free programs with many of the same features.

Once installed, DeskPDF Pro appears as an icon in the Windows system tray; clicking it brings up a small interface onto which users can drag files for conversion. This launches a window in which users can browse to the desired destination location and configure the conversion options; clicking the Advanced check box opens an expanded menu with tools for adding metadata, changing security settings, and customizing the way the PDF is displayed. DeskPDF Pro can convert files to either PDF or PS formats, and users can have the program save the new file in the location of their choice or e-mail it. The program comes with a thorough PDF Users Guide, but most users should be able to figure out its features without too much guidance. Although we liked DeskPDF Pro overall — it was easy to use and gave us plenty of control over the conversion process — the trial version of the program only allows users to convert five files before it starts placing watermarks on the bottom of each page. The program works well and is worth trying out, but if you’re willing to spend some time shopping around, you’re likely to find programs with similar capabilities for free.

Desk UnPDF Converter for Mac is designed to solve the longstanding problem of editing PDF files in a native word processor. By stripping out PDF formatting and converting the text into RTF for Windows 97+ or Open Office, this app allows you to then open and edit those files more easily. While there are certainly some limitations in terms of the formatting, layout, and style of the finished document, it works well.

When you open UnPDF, you can start converting documents right away. Just load any PDF into the software and then select how you want it exported. You can choose from one of five options for export, as well as the number of pages, margins, and how the text and graphics will be displayed in the document. Keep in mind that the formatting of the PDF will greatly effect how it looks when converted. Additionally, because it exports in RTF, not all word processors can open the files; Pages for Mac, for example, can’t handle RTF. The interface, however, is very well made, with everything you need onscreen and the conversion process was fast, every time we tested it.

Desk UnPDF Converter for Mac is a useful piece of software that will allow you to streamline conversion of nearly any PDF you have. The software comes with a trial version that will convert only three pages from any one document at a time, but the paid version is affordable and useful for those who find themselves in need of PDF editing tools, regularly.
