Like an old-time patent medicine, Dr.Salman’s Window Power Tools combines the useful, the harmless, and the potentially dangerous, and sells for an exorbitant price. In this mixed bag of PC utilities, our favorite is HyperNet, which not only optimizes your Internet settings but allows you to customize them by hand. Security Toolkit lets you control access to various parts of Windows (for example, the desktop and the system settings). We were less impressed with the HyperWindows system tweaker, which doesn’t allow the user to specify which Windows settings to change. The MemZilla RAM cleaner may even slow down your computer, since it doesn’t consider the CPU load when optimizing. The interface, for its part, is rather jumbled, and we wish the utilities had been integrated into a single application window. Dr.Salman’s Tools may be all right for curing the PC equivalent of a sore throat, but given its $49.95 price, we think users can easily find handier and cheaper alternatives.

This program provides utilities for increasing your computer’s performance, but it doesn’t deliver all the publisher promises. Dr. Salman’s Winbooster’s cluttered interface features tabs for memory, Internet, and Windows optimization. The program’s sparse options for memory management leave users with few options. The Internet Optimizer simplifies changing some Windows defaults to reflect your connection type. We found no increase in our Internet speed, but some systems with improper defaults may notice an improvement. The application’s Windows Optimizer gives no indication of what is to be optimized and presents no verifiable results. Winbooster can generate and print reports of your system’s current performance. This 10-day demoware is simple enough for all user levels, but its options are too limited for most users. With the availability of more feature rich programs, users may want to look for another system-performance boosting solution.

Despite its cluttered interface, Disk Space Recovery Wizard has several ways to help you clean up your drives. The program offers a long list of search criteria for finding junk files, but the interface seems overly crowded and is flooded with hints about how each feature works.

In testing, it was impressively speedy and effective in locating old log, temporary, and other unnecessary files. Disk Space Recovery Wizard also can remove privacy risks such as cookies and temporary Internet files with the click of a button, although these actions are just as easily performed using standard Windows tools.

The program doesn’t offer a secure file shredder or clean other areas such as the Recycle Bin, and its tight-fisted, seven-day trial is one of the shortest among the applications in this category. Though this application can help you keep your hard drive clean, it’s a bit short on the extras that would make it stand out among the numerous disk cleaners available.

You can efficiently secure your system settings and functions using this powerful utility, but we find its short trial period a real drawback. Dr. Salman’s Window Security Toolkit has a well-designed, easy-to-use interface with a very comprehensible help file. It categorically presents computer sections according to functions so even novice users can easily manage. It also employs a color scheme to identify the action required for applying or removing changes, although we wish message prompts were offered as well. With Dr. Salman’s Window Security Toolkit you can effectively control access to your personal settings by hiding them from other users. Each setting can only be modified through the application itself, which is password-protected. Among the additional features is a file-encryption option that uses a 160- and 128-bit encryption algorithm. The only shortcoming we found in our tests is the seven-day trial period, which didn’t seem sufficient to fully test the application’s capabilities. Even so, we recommend this user-friendly and effective suite of security tools for all skill levels.
