Like many people, we’re big fans of Google Calendar; it’s easy to use, well-organized, and made for sharing with others. But we don’t necessarily love the fact that we have to open a new browser tab every time we want to look at it. Enter Desktop iCalendar. This sleek program lets users view Google Calendar content right on their desktop.

The program’s interface is modular, with boxes for weather, a calendar, a to-do list, and a list of events that displays information for whatever day is selected on the calendar. Each of these boxes can be moved around on the desktop or disabled, and users can choose from nine different skins to customize the program’s appearance. We found it easy to connect to our Google account and sync our various Google calendars with the program; not only did Desktop iCalendar quickly import events that were already on our various Google calendars, it also exported events that we added within the application. We do wish that the program’s to-do list was able to sync with Google Tasks; we’d love a way to have those on our desktop. We also had trouble getting the weather module to work; it would display the weather for some cities, but give error messages for others, even though the cities were included in the program’s list of available locations. Desktop iCalendar’s Help file could stand to be a little more detailed, but it does cover the basics. Overall, we think this program is a nice choice for users who want to view Google Calendar information on their desktop in an attractive way.

After months or years of use, it’s not uncommon for computers to become cluttered with unneeded and duplicate files. This not only takes up space that could be used to store useful data, but also contributes to poor performance. Disk Space Fan allows users to see exactly what’s taking up room on their computers and eliminates the space-wasters. Although the program works just fine, it’s definitely not the most intuitive we’ve ever seen.

The main problem that we encountered with Disk Space Fan is that it tries a little too hard to be cool, favoring sleek graphics over useful descriptions. We’re all for an uncluttered interface, but this program takes it a little too far. The program opens with a list of available disks down the left side, and clicking on each one displays a pie chart showing the amount of full and free disk space. Users can then have the program scan each disk and analyze its contents. This is where the program really puts form over function, displaying the results in what the program calls a “ringschart.” A central circle represents the directory, with a series of nested rings representing each level in the directory. Users can click on each ring to display a new ringschart that drills down deeper into the directory. Yes, it looks cool, but it just didn’t seem like a very efficient, easy-to-process way to display the information. The online Help file is adequate, even though it opens in Internet Explorer whether you want it to or not. In the end, Disk Space Fan wasn’t exactly difficult to use, but we felt like we had to spend too much time trying to figure out how to navigate the interface and interpret the graphs.

Disk Space Fan installs politely but leaves a folder behind upon removal. We recommend this program with reservations.

Desktop iCalendar Lite offers users a way to keep their calendar at the forefront of their computer. With a simple interface and few problems, this is a great way for users to stay on top of the day’s events.

This free program lays itself out on the upper right corner of your desktop. A month-view calendar appears, with the current day highlighted, and below it is a list of reminders for the day and a to-do list. All are dark and hide well on the computer desktop with text that is either orange or white. In addition, the entire image can be altered by accessing the Options menu in the desktop tray icon. From there, users can choose several skin color options as well as the opacity. Entering reminders and to-dos is very simple, thanks to their intuitive nature. Users are taken to a screen that allows for a title, date, and notes to be entered. The reminder allows you to set an alarm, while the to-do can be adjusted with status and priority.

While we wondered why the to-do and reminder options weren’t combined into one excellent package instead of two fairly redundant ones, we felt this was a great program for users looking for an organizational tool that is much simpler than popular in-depth calendaring software. We recommend this program for users seeking a simple calendar.
