BS1 Enterprise Accounting – Free Edition provides a surprising amount of control over a company’s finances and makes the entire process simple. This is a great choice for small businesses.

The program’s interface initially turned us off, since it is primarily a small toolbar on the desktop. However, after reading the Help file’s tutorial, we soon loved how simple and unobtrusive the program was. This simple toolbar felt like an entire accounting department at our fingertips, from Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, to Inventory, Sales and Purchase Orders. Each separate department popped up as a simple screen with a grid pattern depicting all the important details of product and price. Each followed the same layout, and the windows could be arranged to display either all at once or stacked upon one another. Adding a new product or invoice proved to be just as simple, with a menu that practically walked us through each step. The program also provided a Filter feature for each department, which let us choose specifically what we viewed using specific parameters. Overall, the program gave the capability to manage all aspects of business finances without overwhelming us.

BS1 Enterprise Accounting is a freeware program. It leaves folders behind after uninstall. We highly recommend it.

The General Ledger has been the basic bookkeeping tool of double-entry accounting since the Green Eyeshade days. It records financial transactions as both Credits and Debits in balance sheets, which before the advent of software were bound together in huge volumes like something out of a Dickens novel. BS1 General Ledger from Davis Business Systems brings the General Ledger up to cyberspeed with a variety of easy-to-use accounting tools that can track budgets and financial data and generate income statements, balance sheets, and other reports. It’s freeware, a good start, accountancy-wise.

At just 1.44MB, BS1 is a fairly small download for an accounting tool. The setup wizard let us choose to view sample data or enter our own; we started with the sample entry. The program opened with a very small control console, no bigger than a miniplayer. File menu entries offered sample data under Accounts, Journal Vouchers, Budget, and Reports, each displayed in a variety of compact spreadsheetlike views. An excellent Help file included everything from exporting data to Excel to accessing the program’s Delphi source code. We clicked File/Companies/New Company to set up our own data, which involved entering a company name and selecting a directory for the database. We clicked Accounts/New Accounts, and BS1 walked us through the steps of setting up account data with a series of compact wizards. The program offers more than just flexible, attractive accounting sheets, though; under the General menu, we could compact and re-index tables with the Pack/Repair tool, import, purge, or back up data, and set security. The General Ledger menu accesses not only the accounts, JVs, and Budgets tools but also the Totals and History tables. We could also filter entries by date.

BS1 General Ledger proves just how much high-quality business software is available for free, though it’s also available in a paid version that adds technical support and free updates. However, many businesspeople, entrepreneurs, treasurers, and others will appreciate what the freeware can do for both sides of the balance sheet.

BS1 Enterprise Accounting with Manufacturing provides a comprehensive look at all accounting aspects for a small business. While it is a great product, users must decide if it is better than the free version.

The program’s interface initially surprised us, as it was a simple toolbar on our desktop. However, the Help file’s instructions explained that this was actually an intuitive way of managing various aspects of finance. We were able to build and view all imaginable aspects of our business, from Accounts Payable and Receivable, to Stock, Orders, and Manufacturing. All popped up in small grid-like screens that laid out each item and described its financial impact to that department. We were able to add, remove and edit items and information at will and loved the program’s filter feature, which let us view only specific items in each window. However, we didn’t see a huge difference between this program and BS1’s free accounting program. The Manufacturing window was the only new addition and is really only a necessity for monitoring the production of an item. All other users might steer clear of this program for its free cousin.

BS1 Enterprise Accounting with Manufacturing has a 30-day trial. It leaves folders behind after uninstall. While we loved its flexibility and ease, we only recommend this program for users who absolutely need the Manufacturing option. All other users should try the freeware version.

BS1 Enterprise Accounting provides a simple way to view many aspects of small business accounting. While the program was easy to use and effective, it lacks added accounting tools its free cousin provides.

We were initially surprised to find this program’s interface consisted primarily of a desktop toolbar. However, the Help file’s tutorial showed us that this was actually a benefit to keep things simple, and we agreed. With this toolbar we cycled through various accounting departments like Accounts Payable and Receivable, Accounts, Sales, and Inventory. Each was organized in a pop-up window with a grid outlining each product and its financial impact in that particular area. These were exceptionally easy to drag around and arrange onscreen. The program even provided a Filter feature that allowed us to search through each category for specific information. While we were pleased with the results, we don’t think it’s as complete as BS1’s Free Edition, which is the same program, but with additional Sales Orders and Purchase Orders options, which provide a clearer financial picture for small businesses.

BS1 Enterprise Accounting is a freeware program. It leaves folders behind after uninstall. While the program worked well, we do not recommend it, since another free version provides the same tools and more.
