“Spider takes Cockroach” doesn’t quite have the same ring as “Queen takes Knight,” but in the game of Fantasy Chess, it’s all the same. Though the graphics are middling and the gameplay limited to beginning levels, this program does follow the basic rules of chess. The gameboard (and most pieces) are two-dimensional, and for some reason you can’t choose whether to be black or white; the computer chooses for you.

The trial version does, however, let you choose between dinosaur pieces and classic ones. During the game, you can redo your last move or set up situations on the board for further study, but when we tried the latter feature, we couldn’t pick up the game again; it just started over. So to sum up: iffy looks, limited options, and bugs galore–not exactly our chess fantasy.

Find the Difference Game is a challenging puzzle game in which players must identify 12 differences between two similar images. The game is basic and suitable for young children, but contains cute, attractive graphics.

The program’s interface is simple, with two similar images displayed side-by-side. Each puzzle is done in a cartoon style, and we liked that the characters depicted in the images were both white and brown. Each time users locate a difference, they simply click on the spot on either image. A tracker at the top of the screen keeps track of how many differences have been located. If users become stumped they can choose to view the solution to the puzzle (and we have to admit, the puzzles were challenging even to us). The game is suitable for children with rudimentary computer skills; the ability to operate a mouse is really all that’s needed. Although there is no Help file, we found that it wasn’t really necessary; everything about the game is intuitive, with users simply clicking an arrow button to scroll through the available puzzles. This game is a good choice for kids who need to practice their mouse skills or to work on paying attention to detail.

Find the Difference Game is free to try, but the trial version contains only two puzzles. The game installs desktop icons without asking and leaves a folder behind upon removal. We recommend this program to all users.

Coloring Book 10: Baby Animals includes a selection of baby animal drawings that children fill in by clicking on colors in preloaded palettes. Parents can help their children print their finished artwork with a few simple clicks.

Coloring Book 10: Baby Animals features a colorful, easy-to-use interface that children of all ages should be able to navigate. The program’s drawings are simple, so older children may not find them challenging enough. Each drawing is “colored” by selecting colors from the palettes that ring the edges of the drawing. Children can click on the color they want to use with the mouse and then click on the area of the drawing that they want to fill with the selected color. The simple clicking process makes this program a great fit for younger children or children who have difficulties with dexterity. This program could also be a fun way to introduce young children to computers. Coloring Book 10: Baby Animals doesn’t have a Help file, but most users will be able navigate the program without it, and there are further instructions on the manufacturer’s Web site.

This is a trial version of the program that is limited to five sample drawings. It adds a desktop icon without asking when you install it, and it leaves a Program files folder behind when you uninstall it, but those are minor inconveniences. This is a cute and fun program that children will enjoy.
