If you depend on Microsoft’s Outlook, a good recovery tool can save the day if things go wrong. DataNumen’s Advanced Outlook Repair 3.0 can recover email, folders, appointments, tasks, and anything else that holds your critical data in Outlook’s Personal files (PST). AOR supports recovery of attachments, embedded objects, encrypted and password-protected PST files, and deleted Outlook items. It can handle immense files, which protects against obsolescence.

To use AOR, you must have Outlook installed as your default e-mail client. AOR’s dialog-based interface is so intuitive that the fully indexed Help file seems almost superfluous. Tabs access Repair, Batch Repair, and Options, the latter offering an Advanced Options field in addition to the common settings, all clearly labeled. There are browse and search icons for both source and destination directories; we navigated to an older saved PST file that wouldn’t open after upgrading from a 32-bit to a 64-bit OS. We chose to use AOR’s Auto Determined Format feature, though you can enter specific Outlook versions in the format combo box. Clicking Repair displayed a log in the main window and activated a progress bar that displayed AOR’s quick work fixing the file, which subsequently opened fine in Outlook: Totally easy. Recommended for any Microsoft Outlook user.

Advanced Excel Repair is a simple but powerful tool for recovering and repairing damaged or corrupted Excel spreadsheets. It’s designed for businesses and others who rely on Excel, for whom a lost or damaged file can be either a nuisance or a catastrophe.

Advanced Excel Repair has a simple, attractive dialog-based interface with tabs for Repair, Batch Repair, and Preferences, although Preferences covers nothing more than selecting a directory for temporary files and the internal process buffer size. The default tab, Repair, is dominated by a log display, a progress bar, and a Start Repair button, which offers options for recovering cells and formulas. The Batch Repair tab offers a list view of files to be repaired instead of a log view. We selected the Repair tab, opened an archived Excel file that had given us trouble in the past, and clicked Start Repair. Advanced Excel Repair gave the file the once-over, quickly verifying it and saving it to our selected directory. The file opened normally in Excel. Clicking Save Log let us save the repair log, an essential feature in an enterprise environment.

While our Excel file wasn’t badly damaged, Advanced Excel Repair made quick work of sorting it out, and the file opened and functioned normally afterward, which is all we asked. The program proved as easy to use as DataNumen’s other Office recovery tools, too, with which it shares a basic family resemblance. Since businesses rely on Excel spreadsheets to save their critical financial data, a tool like Advanced Excel Repair can quickly pay for itself, not only in time saved in recreating the data (if possible) but also in keeping the original time spent preparing the spreadsheets from going down the tubes. No one wants to do work over again, much less pay for it twice.

Microsoft Office handles so much business that eventually two things are bound to happen: 1) critically important files will be corrupted or damaged, and 2) there will be no backup. You’ll then have two choices: 1) panic, and 2) attempt to recover the file. That’s where Advanced Office Repair (AOFR) from DataNumen comes in. It’s an enterprise-class tool for recovering and repairing not only Word, Excel, Outlook, and Outlook Express files but also Access databases. It can repair files on damaged or corrupted media like floppies, Zip drives, and CD-ROMs and handle legacy files, including Access 95, Excel 3, Word 6.0 and 95, Outlook 97, and all subsequent versions. AOFR offers drag-and-drop capability, context menu integration, batch repair, and command-line operation, so it suits a wide range of environments and installations.

AOFR bundles five tools in its compact interface: Advanced Access Repair, Advanced Excel Repair, Advanced Word Repair, Advanced Outlook Repair, and Advanced Outlook Express Repair, though you can choose to install only those tools you need. As (bad) luck would have it, we had some old, corrupted Word files for Advanced Word Repair to tackle. We opened the tool and saw a small dialog with source and destination fields, a log display, a progress bar, and tabs for Repair, Batch Repair, Options, and Advanced Options; the latter two consisting of simple selections for a temporary files directory, buffer size, and some output options. We clicked the icon to add Word files, which opened a search tool with tabbed options to search general attributes, date and time, or selected size and attributes, as well as a browse option where we could specify files, folders, or directories to search. Since we were interested in what AOFR would find, we started a general search, located our bad files, selected them, chose an output directory, and clicked Start Repair. AOFR tracked the repair process and displayed a pop-up message when it was finished. We navigated to the folder and clicked a file, which opened normally. AOFR’s other tools had minor stylistic differences in their interfaces but offered similar functionality and, more significantly, similar performance.

We were almost as impressed by AOFR’s ability to locate lost Office files as its repair job. It’s not cheap, but it can pay for itself by recovering critical files and lost work in a corporate environment.
