Those who spend most of their time working from a computer may need an application to track their time. Time Clock for Mac is an easy-to-use application designed to do just this; but its operation is ultimately so clunky that it detracts from its usefulness.

Time Clock for Mac is available for free and has no restrictions. After downloading, the program installs easily without any interaction required by the user. At startup, there are no tutorials or user instructions available, which was a disappointment since the menu looks dated and the program’s operation was not obvious. It was also unclear if technical support was available. The first screen has areas where the user can see how long the clock has been running and adjust time for breaks. It took some trial and error to locate the area on the top menu where the clock can be started and stopped. This area also allows the user to see a log of their time. This area also allows entries to be made for describing what the user was doing during any clock time period, which would be useful for those with project-based jobs. Unfortunately, the buttons for starting and stopping sometimes did not register and required multiple clicks to operate.

Time Clock for Mac’s poor design and spotty functionality make it hard to recommend and we suggest users who need a way to track or monitor their time look elsewhere for a more user-friendly and less glitchy option.

FixIt II for Mac removes some additional characters that often appear and clutter e-mails that are forwarded many times. However, while the program cleans up the characters created through multiple forwarding, it doesn’t have the ability to delete certain special characters, including $, %, and # from text in e-mails.

FixIt II for Mac’s interface lacks advanced design, and uses basic text only, which gives it a dated overall appearance. Users can paste text into a main window that needs to have unwanted characters removed. Clicking a button labeled “Simple” removes the vertical bars, as well as the “>” character, which are often found in forwarded e-mails. A “Complex” button purportedly removes additional unwanted characters, but these are not clearly listed in the program, which is a disappointment. In our tests, the app did not remove many special characters, such as the “@,” making it difficult to interpret the program’s usefulness with other characters. When the user clicks on either “Simple” or “Complex” buttons, the text is automatically placed in the computer’s clipboard, making it easy to paste into additional e-mails to others. If the user wants to edit the text, manually, they can use “Edit-Select All” and then paste it where intended. The instruction text in the main window tells you how to use the program but it doesn’t seem particularly clear regarding the “Auto Clear” feature as it mentions the “Fix It” button, which, while testing, wasn’t visible in the interface.

FixIt II for Mac could be useful to users who use Apple Mail and frequently forward e-mails as it will make text less cluttered and more readable. However, while the program can clear some characters from text, its lack of support for other common special characters makes it a less useful application, overall.

My Data for Mac gives you a handy table to help you keep track of all kinds of information that can be broken down into small chunks. It’s an innovative way to stay organized and on top of your daily tasks, appointments, work projects, and more.

The interface for My Data is clear and straightforward, and the Help document explains all features clearly. In the main window, you’ll see a chart with five columns. The first column is for your topic, and then the remaining four are for subtopics. You can enter a new topic and subtopics into the spaces below the chart, and then add the finished line to the chart above. Add as many topics as you’d like, and the chart will become scrollable once you get past five rows. Each space on the chart allows a maximum of 15 characters, and when you have a line highlighted and click “Use,” you’ll open a new chart with more space to enter information about each of the subtopics from that line. The spaces on the secondary chart allow a maximum of 25 characters, except for the third column, which allows 80. These restrictions might make this app inappropriate for recording certain types of data, but it can also help you organize your thoughts because you have to record things so succinctly.

Below the chart and entry boxes on the main screen, you’ll also see buttons for “Add Topic,” “Update,” “Delete,” “Use,” and “Quit.” This app is free, and its uncomplicated interface makes for quick data entry and editing. It’s worth trying out to see if it’s something that could be useful to you.

Find A Word for Mac encourages you to create words out of scrambled letters and can keep you glued to your computer screen for hours. Though it features a rather plain design, this game offers multiple rounds and a top ten leaderboard, making it highly addictive. If you want to have fun on your Mac with an engaging word game, this one is certainly for you.

Find A Word for Mac’s interface and graphics are rather dull, but the app compensates with its exciting gameplay. Once you choose between 90-, 60-, and 30-second rounds, you have to come up with as many words from the eight scrambled letters displayed as you can. Here’s a tip: don’t choose proper names and contractions because they won’t score any points. You get only five turns to score. Correct words are displayed within the interface, and at the end of the rounds your score is calculated against the top ten previous scores to determine your ranking. A feature we liked is the ability to add additional words to the game’s word list through the Word Maintenance option in the Menu Bar. The app gets a thumbs down for lacking an option for online competitive play.

Find A Word for Mac won’t disappoint you, provided that you love word games. The interface and graphics aren’t eye-candy, but the fun gameplay, the good performance, and the stability of the app make it a worthwhile download if you’re looking for a gaming experience that will challenge your mind and possibly enrich your vocabulary.

Color Schemes for Mac allows users to create color patterns for use in a number of applications. The free application was easy to download and doesn’t require installation.

Color Schemes for Mac opens to a well-organized interface separated into few sections. Three large windows on the left are blank initially, but house the chosen color schemes. A right side menu has options where users can place previously designed matches, along with a sample one. Clicking the button next to each brings them up in the three windows quickly. In the lower left, sliders for red, green, and blue that correspond to each of the windows allow the user to change the colors. The specific number can be entered, which also populates an additional small window with a hex code. This can be used for designing Internet pages and inserting specific colors using codes. Clicking a button saves the scheme for later retrieval. The user can choose between two modes: Manual and Automatic. In the Automatic mode the user is able to mix the color only for the top window, which then displays colors for the two bottom windows automatically. In the Manual mode colors for all three windows can be set separately, giving the user more freedom.

From Web design to home decorating, coming up with color matches quickly may be important and useful. Color Schemes for Mac performs well and could prove to be useful to users who need a light and quick application to create colors and match them with others.

When completing a wood or other project from stock materials, predetermining the layout for cuts helps save costs. Planner for Mac may appeal to a very specialized group of people who need computer assistance in planning a project’s cuts, but the price and limited functions may make it a less desirable option.

Available as a free trial version limited to 10 uses, the full program requires a $10 payment. Planner for Mac installs quickly and setup is smooth outside of a dialog box explaining the trial limitations. The program is not supported and lacks instructions. The specialized program means that only a select few would even understand what it is supposed to do, let alone how to operate it. When undertaking woodworking-type projects, you can enter in the measurements of each piece for the project and place it on a mock “board” on the desktop. This supposedly allows you to better plan where to make the actual cuts to ensure the smallest amount of unused wood or other material remains. After experimenting to figure out the operation, we found that the program does not work well. It is easy to enter the dimensions of both the base materials and the pieces to be cut. However, when we were trying to decipher the mockup, it was very difficult to work with the diagram showing where the cuts will be made.

Planner for Mac may only appeal to a few specialized users and is not the type of software an average Mac user will find interesting.

Useful for users with vision problems or who just want to see screen items more easily, Point N See for Mac offers a neat little tool for selecting and magnifying a portion of the screen. The application works well to zoom in to the cursor area, but may be too obtrusive for everyday use.

The freely available program installs easily. Point N See for Mac lacks any menu, but instead brings up a small window that displays the screen area where the cursor is located. This enlarges it several times, making it much easier to see. Users can click and drag the window to move it to their desired location, as well as to make it larger or smaller. Much like a sound playback system, holding the cursor over the program window, itself, creates a small, but distracting feedback loop. In terms of options, a very small menu allows changes to the zoom level, and controls whether the window, itself, is shown or hidden. An additional option in the form of a check box allows crosshairs to be displayed in the zoomed area, making it easier to focus on specific items. It would have been nice for there to be a key stroke to activate and deactivate the program.

For those looking for a way to see areas of their screen better, Point N See for Mac performs well and could be a useful addition to your system.
