Corel MediaOne Plus lets you quickly organize your collection of digital photos and videos, and it’s a powerful all-in-one application for managing photos all the way from your camera to a finalized scrapbook. It also backs up important files online, using a companion Sharpcast service. MediaOne Plus offers a solid collection of features in a logical, if uninspired, interface. But is that enough these days?

The interface consists of a large window for viewing albums, folders, and individual photos or videos, with main navigation–Home, Enhance, Show, and Create. Home provides the organizational features, Enhance includes basic image editing and effects, Show lets you combine photos, videos, and music into your own remixed creations, and Create offers a variety of photo products like collages, albums, and greeting cards. The Corel Shows are a fun way to create a quick memento of an event or trip, but they can only be exported as WMV videos.

Some of the actions, such as “Share Photos as E-mail,” appear in two places in the navigation. Unfortunately, so do promotions for Paint Shop Pro Photo. It’s OK to inform users of other applications–and it would be different if the program was free–but to put links for other software in the navigation of a $50 program seems like too much.

Both the trial version of MediaOne Plus and the Sharpcast backup service require two separate e-mail registrations. It’s a mild annoyance, but the registration process was painless. The Sharpcast service works fine: there is no limit to the number or size of the photos you can upload. Large photos will be resized after 30 days, but will be kept at print quality for sizes up to 5 x 7 inches. For the free plan, a 50MB storage limit applies to videos and other multimedia files.

What’s interesting is that MediaOne Plus is built on the back end of the now-unsupported software Snapfire, which was a free photo-management tool Corel launched back in the fall of 2006. There are all sorts of new features in MediaOne Plus–such as the ability to add music to Shows or text captions to photos, as well as nine additional projects like certificates and greeting cards–but do they merit the new price tag? Luckily, a full-featured trial of 30 days gives you plenty of opportunity to try out the software before deciding.

Perhaps a touch less powerful than the most elaborate photo-editing packages, Corel has expanded Ulead’s PhotoImpact and blown it up. The download file is nearly double the size of the last version, but PhotoImpact X3 makes a concerted effort to compete with Adobe. Positioned between Elements and Photoshop, this app delivers everything most users need: editing tools, effects, and ready-made elements for creations.

The wide variety of textures, frames, effects, animations, and brushes wouldn’t necessarily justify the download, but the app is more or less a snap to use. Wizard dialogs let you instantly create attractive and functional Web-page objects, including buttons, image maps, bullets, and backgrounds. The program works with layers, too. The traditional photo-editing interface has only one peculiarity: the main docked panel, which can hold all the other panels and quickly hide and show them. It also lets you quickly switch among work-space layouts. Beginners, for instance, can display just the controls for basic editing.

All in all, this powerful graphics program will appeal to photographers and Web designers who need a significantly cheaper alternative to monster packages such as Photoshop.

Corel Painter 2015 offers more options for working the way you want, including tablet support, custom workspaces, and new brushes. Corel has listened to its community in introducing yearly releases instead of two-year cycles, promising faster, more reliable updates. With Painter 2015, Corel brings the digital art suite to the tablet, with Real Time Stylus support alongside WinTab, three new Particle Brushes, Jitter Smoothing, workspace customization, and a boatload of enhancements perfect for portable digital artists.

Pros

Paint anywhere: Painter 2015 introduces a brand-new mode for your Windows 8 tablet PC. On a Surface Pro 2, Painter’s tablet mode with Real Time Stylus support performed admirably. The drawing experience is a slight improvement over most mobile apps, thanks to the Surface’s heavy-duty hardware. Overall Painter’s tablet mode is convenient enough for you to make quick sketches on the bus or train.

Work how you want: Choose from multiple workspaces optimized for various creative types: photo artists, illustrators, traditional artists, or students. With a plethora of tools and endless options, Painter can be overwhelming. Corel eases the process with presets, laying out only the tools you need for the projects you’re working on. Of course, you can also create custom workspaces.

More natural brushes: Painter introduces three new types of Particle Brush: Gravity, Spring, and Flow. Photo artists will appreciate the Gravity brush, which adds a sense of weight that’s helpful in colorization projects. Spring is an airy brush that can help replicate wispy effects like fog or smoke. The Flow brush creates weaves that make creating hairs, beards, and fur effects effortless. The brand-new Jitter Smoothing features bring a much more natural feel to the brushes, softening each stroke.

Improved stability: Corel has always been conscious of its followers’ hardware. By keeping requirements low (Pentium 4), Corel has ensured that Painter can deliver to a wider audience. The expansion of 64-bit support for Windows in the previous release — and now for Mac — demonstrates this. That said, our preview build of Painter operated without a major hitch when we tested it on a regular Core i5 laptop with integrated graphics, the Surface Pro 2 (also i5), and a custom i7 with a discrete video card.

Cons

Steep learning curve: Painter is geared toward professionals, so newcomers will have some difficulty setting up. But Corel does offer a YouTube channel to guide first-time users.

May not be enough reason to upgrade: A few particle brushes, a tablet mode, and more customizability mean that Painter is even more flexible than ever before, but is it enough to justify a full upgrade? While traditional artists taking a stab at digital media will find Painter 2015 a steal, veteran Painters with an older version will have to decide if the new brushes and tablet mode are worth it. If you’re used to the two-year release cycle, waiting for the 2016 update might make more sense.

Bottom Line

Painter 2015 gives digital artists the flexibility they need to create amazing work whenever inspiration strikes. Designed for artists and photographers, Painter 2015 is the closest you can get to working with traditional media on a computer or a tablet. Beginners may be overwhelmed with the many options available to them, but there’s ample support to help get going.

Very fast and responsive: Corel Painter is very fast. While it requires a decent amount of power to run at peak efficacy, it operates most of its basic features efficiently, from extremely large canvases to quick zoom-ins.

Steep learning curve: This isn’t new for a Corel Painter program, but it’s an issue that newcomers must face: The learning curve is steep. If you’ve used previous versions, it won’t take long to navigate the updates and additions. But for those without previous experience, or those who have used only Photoshop, the learning process can be frustrating. Additionally, you may find that the most powerful features are best used on a tablet.

Bottom Line

Corel Painter 2015 is the best iteration to date, bringing in a number of new features; powerful, memory-friendly tools; and physics-based painting that in the hands of a master can create true masterpieces. This is a great piece of software for any digital artist.

Corel Painter Essentials 4 is a slimmed-down version of Painter for home use, but don’t let that fool you into thinking that the average home user will be disappointed. For those who like to play around with their photos, tweaking them artistically, Essentials provides a deep toolbox under its intuitive layout.

All the tool icons in the palette are large and easy to understand, there’s nothing obscure or hard to remember here. Brush sizes and opacity can be adjusted at the top of the editing window using sliders, and while a few main brushes live on the main left-side toolbar, you can change those by accessing the Brush Drawer. The program features two workspaces, Drawing & Painting and Photo Painting. The first is a standard image-creation template, while the second lets you upload a photo and “paint” over it.

The Photo Painting was quite impressive. When you upload an image, you select which parts of it you want shown by using the same variety of paint tools available in the Drawing & Painting workspace. The choices are quite deep, too: you can choose to change the texture of the image by changing the paper, you can change the brush type and width, and even use different kinds of paints to change your staid photo into an Impressionist work of art.

The latest release of Corel Studio focuses on building up its consumer-level video-editing and production suite. Version X6 of VideoStudio is essentially Corel’s response to the rise of HD content on affordable consumer gadgets. Corel has diligently kept up with consumers’ pace when it comes to supporting such file types.

Using VideoStudio Pro as a primary editing program was a mixed bag; as someone who frequently produces videos on both a casual and professional basis, I had trouble envisioning the audience that Corel is targeting with VideoStudio. But first let’s cover the core features.

Editing videos clips in Video Studio takes place in two workspace modes: storyboard and timeline. Here is where personal preference comes into play. On one hand, Corel’s workspace layout is tailored to getting users quickly into the video workspace. To edit videos, simply drag and drop your clips into an area at the bottom of the interface. On the other hand, more-conventional editors use a tree-view library structure with folders that allow for better management of large projects. VideoStudio Pro lets you get to work quickly, but it can become a hassle as you work with more media clips.

Corel approaches video editing with a concentration on individual clips and moments, primarily on a single video track. The result is a workflow that forces you to focus on incremental production if you want to create a higher-quality product for longer movies. The workflow should be fine for a homemade movie trailer or 5-minute video sequence, but it is far less than ideal for bigger projects that deal with multiple takes, angles, and sound clips on one track.

Layering is limited to one main video track, with up to 20 “overlay” tracks, one main “voice” track, and up to three additional music tracks. You can easily make picture-in-picture effects by layering videos in the timeline and track. It’s also a good way to sync multiple clips together of the same scene. However, I found myself getting the main and overlay tracks confused as more and more clips piled on.

Adding transitions and effects are also as simple as dragging and dropping — navigate to an effect or overlay on the upper-right panel, then drag your selection onto the clip in your storyboard or timeline. Rendering preview animations from the menu caused noticeable slowdown of my machine, so you don’t want to spend too much time with this option running. In my test setup (Core i7 processor, GTX460 GPU, and 8GB RAM), the program seemed to struggle when rendering dSLR footage at 1080p resolution shot with a Canon 600D; however, rendering 1080p footage taken with a Galaxy S3 worked flawlessly. Your mileage will likely vary depending on your specs.

Another major addition to version X6 is the ability to set motion tracking and define paths for overlay objects. Corel’s VideoStudio comes packed with a few stock patterns and paths, but I can hardly think of many scenes or casual videos that I’d shoot that would be appropriate for those. Instead, I’d rather focus on the custom path or tracking tool. You can select a person or object in each clip, and VideoStudio will attempt to follow that person in the footage by scanning each frame. The result is an automated path that can also be accompanied by simple text or graphics, like a floating name, identifier, or even a silly face. A more practical application would be sports footage, where a bike racer or speeding downhill skier could be tracked and identified by name.

Though it’s not perfect, you can edit and adjust motion paths to smooth jagged points and create more-polished effects. There are many variables that will affect the quality of your results, but overall it’s a neat feature if used sparingly and correctly.

Corel has many interesting features to its base unit, with added bonuses and effects in the Ultimate package. Though VideoStudio X6 can certainly handle footage from more-advanced machines, professional users will probably prefer alternative options even if the price tag remains higher, because of the limitations of the workflow within X6. VideoStudio X6 is much better for casual or hobby users using nondedicated gadgets like smartphones and point-and-shoot cameras. At its reasonable price, X6 is close to hitting that attractive sweet spot for the right low-to-mid-end user.
