Comodo Internet Security is Comodo’s free antivirus suite. It packs an antivirus scanner and firewall, which are standard for AV suites, but also unique tools like an integrated sandbox environment and a desktop widget.

Pros

Virtualized sandbox: Not many antivirus scanners come with a sandbox environment for running unknown programs and Web sites, but Comodo Internet Security goes the extra mile by providing a virtualized environment that looks like Chrome OS. From the virtualized box, you can browse the Web using Comodo’s own Dragon browser and not worry about programs making permanent changes to your system. Certain features like Adobe Flash are disabled by default, even when running browsers like Chrome.

Scanning and processing: Comodo Internet Security displays flagged items as a hierarchical tree, whereas other antivirus apps show results in a line-by-line list. This organization makes it easier to act on known apps that are flagged as potentially unwanted programs. For each detected threat, you can clean, ignore the warning, or label false alerts for stub installers and known programs that fall in the potentially unwanted category.

Malware detection: AV-Test rated Comodo Internet Security at 5.5/6.0. The scores put Comodo Internet Security in the upper 90th percentiles compared to the industry average for malware detection in a four-week test period.

Cons

Aggressive notification: Upon first use, Comodo Internet Security bugs you about…pretty much everything. We were pegged with countless pop-up prompts from minimizing windows and detected networks, to pushing GeekBuddy (Comodo’s tech-help hotline) services post-scan. It was so overwhelming that we felt more stressed than educated.

Potentially unwanted flags: Comodo Internet Security is eager to categorize apps and installers as potentially unwanted programs. A couple of our own files were considered unknown and flagged as risks. Comodo Internet Security leans toward “better safe than sorry,” but some alerts felt highly unwarranted.

Bottom Line

Comodo Internet Security offers solid protection and some pretty useful features, thanks to its integrated virtualization approach to running apps and browsing the Web. Though the pop-up explanations and slightly aggressive flags are annoying, we still recommend Comodo Internet Security as a terrific free antivirus program.

If you’re running a fairly recent edition of Windows, you’re probably also using the built-in Windows Firewall. It does a good job, but there’s no reason not to take advantage of much more capable (yet just as free) firewalls, especially when they’re easier to use and come with significant extras. Take Comodo Firewall: This full-featured, multilayer firewall application uses cloud-based data to analyze new programs and data to prevent attacks, including zero-day attacks. It protects your system from viruses, Trojans, worms, hacker attacks, and other threats. Extras include a Geek Buddy subscription, the SecureDNS network, and a speedy, secure Web browser, Comodo Dragon.

Comodo Firewall’s setup includes three network locations, with appropriate security levels for each: Home, Work, and Public. We chose Home. Comodo Firewall’s operation is very much like other firewalls we’ve tried: the first time you use a program or access a Web site with the firewall running, you need to enable it in a pop-up that remembers your choice unless you tell it otherwise. The firewall’s system tray icon accesses a menu that let us configure the Firewall and Defense & Security levels, and also its Sandbox feature and Game Mode.

Setup required a reboot, as did some settings, such as the Proactive Security Configuration. A simple, colorful interface gave us quick access to the two main components, the Firewall and Defense+ features. In daily use, Comodo Firewall is every bit as unobtrusive and easy to manage as the most popular free standalone firewalls for Windows, and just as flexible. It also includes lots of help options, such as the Geek Buddy feature and online forums and documentation.

We also like Dragon, which we updated shortly after installing it. Dragon automatically imported favorites, history, passwords, and other data we specified from our default browser (Chrome) including our bookmarks toolbar (thanks). Dragon is Chrome’s cousin; it’s based on the Chromium engine. Dragon is great for trying SecureDNS without altering your network settings. The SecureDNS network offers various security features, and it didn’t slow down our browsing. Comodo Firewall is a top contender among free firewall applications.

Like previous releases, COMODO’s free antivirus solution for Windows offers solid full-time antivirus protection and basic features comparable to similar freeware, including a desktop widget, firewall protection, Game Mode, drag-and-drop submission of suspicious apps for analysis, and cloud-based definitions, but it also comes with some unique extras, such as the COMODO Dragon secure Web browser, which is free, and the optional Geek Buddy support service, which requires a paid license.

Installing COMODO Antivirus involves several options, such as enabling cloud-based analysis of suspicious programs, which we accepted, and COMODO’s free Secure DNS Server option, which we declined because it changes your PC’s network settings, though we tried it before and found it reasonably fast. The Geek Buddy and related Anti-Error services provide live technical help, apparently, though they require activation. COMODO Antivirus’ main interface is like other free antivirus tools in general layout and look, and you’ll probably have little trouble setting things up, though a splash screen describes how to get started, and the Online Help options include an extensive manual and searchable forums. COMODO Antivirus automatically updated the latest definitions and started a full system scan, which found a couple of issues (nothing serious, thankfully) and removed them with a reboot for good measure (we could also opt for Geek Buddy help to make sure our PC was clean). COMODO Antivirus seemed to take a bit longer to update than similar tools and often involved a reboot; we didn’t mind since we like thorough updates. Dragon generally lives up to its billing as “a faster, more secure version of Chrome.”

We found that COMODO Antivirus also plays well with similar tools, including Microsoft Security Essentials, though we suggest taking care when mixing antivirus solutions. We’re confident that COMODO Antivirus 6.2 is up to the task of protecting your PC, though.

Popular security software developer Comodo has developed a Chrome remix said to have higher security features than its predecessors. Comodo Dragon is an aesthetically minimalist browser that is attractive, responsive, and secure.

Apart from the red hue, the Chromium-based browser’s interface is identical to that of market contender Google Chrome. From the detachable tabs at the top of the screen to the bookmark-syncing option, it is impossible to instantly recognize where the “remix” takes place. The Help tab even redirects you to Google Chrome’s Help page and the Extensions tab redirects you to Google as well. It also keeps Chrome’s incognito mode option, where all browsing information and cookies are deleted following the user’s Web session. Upon poking around the Options menu, there are a couple of visible differences: there are no location settings and Dragon does not present an option to send “usage statistics and crash reports to Google.”

A browser developed by a company that is best known for its firewall software can leave people feeling more secure about their Internet usage. Comodo Dragon will pull up a bright-yellow caution message warning people that sending information may be unsafe when they are entering a Web site with an unstable security certificate. One such message pops up even when logging into large sites like Facebook. Also, Dragon does not send browsing information to a remote server.

Based on simple timer tests run on Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3, the average cold start-up time was 4.53 seconds, warm start-up was 0.92s, and navigation time from nytimes.com to facebook.com was 0.87s. Comodo Dragon proves to have slightly faster page-loading speed than Google Chrome 5.0.375.70, which had results of 5.71s, 1.27s, and 1.23s, respectively. However, in Sunspider JavaScript benchmark testing, Comodo Dragon received an average score of 929.6 milliseconds, whereas Google got 734ms. Based on these results, Google may have faster JavaScript performance than Comodo.

Dragon is not only fast, but like Google Chrome, it is not strewn with numerous icons, leaving more room for Web viewing. For those who are extra cautious about their online security, or for those who are worried about Google’s data-mining, this fast browser is a great choice.
