Clipboard Pimper offers a number of features for managing and utilizing the clipboard on your Mac, but it suffers substantially because of a lack of clear direction, labeling, and an interface that frustrates more than it helps. The result is a very uneven app that can be useful if you know exactly what you are trying to do, but more often than not will get in its own way.

After installation, you can open Clipboard Pimper quickly. The result is a small, single pane window with a number of buttons on it and a blank box in the middle. You can create text, dictate text, highlight and work with text, save it to a TXT file and quite a bit more in this window. But because the window is so small, the icons are not labeled, and the interface is so jumbled together, it’s hard to know what any one button does without waiting for the tooltip to appear, and even then, the purpose of the app is never fully explained. The target audience for this app is anyone who wants to work with the clipboard content on their computer between apps, saving it for future use, or accessing and editing it on the fly. It handles this fine, but only after digging past the overly compact and sometimes messy layout.

Clipboard Pimper is a useful app in a not-very-useful package. For those that need the functions it offers and can work with the interface as is, it will prove useful. For those that need a more intuitive app that they can pick up and use right away, this app won’t be what you’re looking for.

Talking Alphabet for Mac can help your child learn the alphabet in a fun way. Unfortunately, its reliance on the keyboard or mouse for most of its features means children will likely have a more passive experience, with parents operating the program. Still, it can be an entertaining app. For your child or for you? Hmm.

Talking Alphabet comes with a small and rather basic interface with no fullscreen option, making it not too attractive for little boys or girls. You have to click on a letter from the application menu or alternatively to type it on a keyboard, and the letter is spoken aloud in a clear voice. Although vibrantly colorful, the letters on the screen are poorly rendered, graphically, so there’s little hope that your child will like them. The good news is that you can play the traditional alphabet song if you want. There are a couple of other things you can do with this app, including displaying the letters in lower case, bringing up a separate numbers screen, viewing pictures depicting items beginning with each letter, and even playing a basketball game — an exercise of questionable educational value.

If you’re looking for a basic tool to supplement your child’s alphabet lessons, Talking Alphabet will do. But this app is probably going to turn out to be more fun for you than for your child, because you do all the clicking and typing. For children used to iPhones and iPads, Talking Alphabet probably won’t be too appealing.

Simple Notes for Mac is a desktop notepad that lets you create and customize the look and feel of your notes but doesn’t let you organize them. The app comes with a poorly-designed, small and cluttered interface, and in terms of features, it doesn’t have much to offer, either.

Simple Notes for Mac features a tiny main window of only approximately an inch and a half wide and just as high, making it hard to see and harder to use. What’s worse, the interface sports ancient graphics; Socrates himself would frown at them. Typing and copying/pasting text into the window is fairly easy, but there is no obvious way to change or organize notes. At least there’s a minuscule button in the upper left that lets you change the font, but the options are limited. There are also options to change the font color as well as the color of the main window; but other than that, there is not much else useful for customizing your notes here. However, the app pleasantly surprises with a text-to-speech feature that can read your notes aloud. Not only is this feature accurate, but it also sounds good.

Simple Notes for Mac isn’t likely to become your favorite note-taking app for Mac anytime soon. The dated, poorly-organized interface, the lack of features, and the overall clumsiness of the app make it a poor choice for any writer. The text-to-speech feature stands out, but is not enough to redeem this app.

DownIMG for Mac allows you to quickly save your favorite Web site images, while at the same time giving you multiple conversion options, including PNG, JPG, and GIF. Unfortunately, the app’s interface is far from perfect and can be a challenge to use.

DownIMG for Mac installs quickly and opens to a Lilliputian interface that lets you enter a photo or Web site URL to download a specific image or all images from a Web site. The problem with the interface is that it’s so small and yet so colorful that it makes the user experience quite frustrating, at times. Icons are poorly designed and some are even hard to decipher. Luckily, hovering over each icon gives you a small description of what it represents. To compensate for its interface faults, DownIMG is speedy. It converted a 4.6MB JPG image we used for testing to a PNG image in just a couple of seconds. We were able to resize our image quite quickly, too. When asked to fetch and convert all images from a specific Web page, the app didn’t fail, either. For testing purposes we tried fetching images from multiple Web sites, and the app managed to download all images within seconds to a designated folder on our desktop.

While its undersized interface makes it a rather poor photo app to use, we cannot complain about the overall effectiveness and features of DownIMG for Mac. If you’re looking for a speedy way to download single or multiple image files from the Web by directly inputting URLs, or an easy way to resize your images or convert them to different formats, you will want to try it out.
