Mahjong Free is a tile-based matching game. Despite the name, Mahjong Free is not the traditional mah-jongg game you’ll see played with four players, but what’s called Mahjong Solitaire, in which you try to match identical tiles. Mahjong Free is available for Mac and iOS devices.

Mahjong Free starts with a stack of tiles laid out in a predictable pattern. The goal of the game is to choose pairs of identical tiles, which are then removed to show tiles underneath. To finish the game you’ve got to choose the pairs in such a way that you can completely remove all tile pairs, instead of ending up blocked and unable to move. The choice of which tiles to match (there are typically four of each type) to open up other matching possibilities is where the strategy comes into play. Mahjong Free gives you traditional Chinese tile faces but you can choose from several backgrounds. There’s a hint mechanism if you want to learn the game a bit better.

We’ve played Mahjong Free for many months, and as a Mahjong Solitaire implementation it is very well done. Like many people do, we originally got the game thinking it was traditional mah-jongg, but the implementation of solitaire is done well enough to keep this game on the regular playing list.

Bubble Free is a Mac OS X bubble-grouping game. It is identical to the Bubble MegaShift iOS game from the same publisher (99 cents for iOS; no free version listed in the App Store). Like so many other grouping games, it opens with a mix of colored bubbles that you remove by clicking on groups of two or more, causing the rest to shift down and fill the void. The larger the group you remove, the higher the score, until you can’t remove any more.

Bubble Free installs easily enough and takes a second or two to learn. The graphics are OK, but there’s nothing really eye-catching about the visuals here. Sure, the bubbles can change to gems or other shapes, but the gameplay is not unique and there are, in our opinion, better games along the same lines. We got bored with Bubble Free quickly, although some casual gamers may find it more interesting than we did.

Bubble Free may find a place on your Mac, if you like this kind of simple, 2D grouping game, but for many gamers it will be too simple and basic and there are better options of this nature out there.

Packed into a simple interface, the game Pool! comes with limited playing options, but it will become the favorite time waster of those who like playing 8-ball in real life. No stunning effects here, just simple pool playing.

At first launch, pool players won’t be surprised by the limited play option available and the lack of a Help file. The explanation is simply that you don’t need any help, as the game is a no-brainer. Players can choose whether they play the game against the computer or a friend, and Options are limited to just enabling and disabling the sound effects. That’s all there is to it.

When you start the first game, you can adjust the table color or the shooting power, which is very cool; just like in real life, sometimes you need to have a stronger shot and sometimes not. Playing with the Power button slider will show users how far the ball will go, which is pretty cool. In addition, the app can display the numbers of the balls, but you don’t need it, as you are playing 8-ball.

Also we found it very useful that the game maps out the cue ball’s trajectory as well as the other balls’. The graphics are simple; nothing fancy, just enough to keep the illusion of playing on a pool table.

Overall, Pool! is a fun app to play, and we liked how the balls reacted while playing, which made the gameplay smooth. The sound is pretty basic, but despite its limited options, Pool! is a good app to fill some spare time, with or without your friends.
