If you spend a lot of time working with text files, you may find it handy to be able to combine multiple text files into one without a bunch of cutting and pasting. That’s exactly what TXTcollector does. It’s a simple program with a very specific purpose: to streamline the process if text files play a large role in your work or hobbies.

The program’s interface is plain and intuitive, just a small rectangle with a few menus and buttons. First, select the directory you want to scan for files and the file format you want to use. In addition to text files, TXTcollector can handle 11 other files formats, including HTML, XML, CSV, and others. Users then choose from among nine options for separators, lines of punctuation used in the finished document to demarcate the end of one of the original files and the beginning of another. Users can also create custom separators if desired, or use no separator at all. TXTcollector also lets you specify whether or not to include the original file names, omit carriage returns, or add spaces. Once you’ve configured everything to your satisfaction, just click the Combine all files button; the program will prompt you for a destination location and name for the file. We found TXTcollector to be extremely easy to use, and it performed just as expected. There’s no Help file, but the interface makes everything pretty easy to figure out. Overall, we think that TXTcollector is a useful tool to have around if you need a quick way to turn multiple text files into one well-formatted document.

Easy to use and reliable, this small alarm clock does its best to make sure you never miss an appointment.

Alarm Bluefive Software’s small user interface is accessed through either the desktop or taskbar icons. You can choose to keep the interface on top of whatever you are working on, or let it run in the background. The time displayed on the interface resembles a digital clock, but you can easily adjust the color and size of the numbers. Setting the alarm is extremely easy, and is accomplished by simply entering the time you want the alarm to go off. The alarm display, including messages, and music can be adjusted through the program’s Preferences menu. You can even add your own music files for the alarm. If you don’t want to mess with the configurations, the preset intervals under the Quick menu let you quickly choose when you want the alarm to sound. A snooze option is included, and you can choose the snooze intervals. The navigation and commands were logical, and the program is easily mastered. Most important of all, though, the alarm went off each and every time we set it.

This free program is extremely easy to use, but a brief Help file is included just in case you need it. We highly recommend this alarm clock for all users. It has just the right mix of simplicity and features, and offers users an easy way to set and get helpful reminders.

Screen-capture utilities come in a lot of different flavors; some are so basic that they’re barely useful, while others are jam-packed with complex features. SnapShot is a program that doesn’t go to either extreme. It has plenty of useful tools and options, but it’s still simple enough to master within a minute or two.

The program’s interface is plain, with a viewing area in which you can see your most recent screen capture and a few menus across the top that give you access to the program’s settings. SnapShot uses hot keys to let you capture the entire screen, the active window, or a specific area of the screen that you can select with the mouse. Once the image is loaded in SnapShot, you can copy it to the clipboard, send it to Paint or an image editor, e-mail the image, or upload it using FTP. There are plenty of ways to customize SnapShot’s behavior: you can specify the default image editor, have the program hide its taskbar button, and automatically save captured images to a specific directory. You can also select JPEG quality and select from seven different file types for saving or sending images. The program doesn’t have a Help file per se, but it does come with a ReadMe file that that contains basic notes about its usage. Overall, we found SnapShot to be easy to work with and we were quite happy with its performance. Anyone seeking a simple screen-capture utility should give it a try.

PIXresizer provides a simple and fast set of tools for resizing and reformatting photos. The program provides a strong service and a usable format that someone with any skill set can operate.

We loved the single screen interface that was full of intuitive radio button controls. We never needed to look at the Help file because all the direction we needed was in front of our face. We were able to quickly select a button that shrank our image by a specific percentage or enter a specific set of dimensions for our picture. We were pleasantly surprised by the file type converter, which operated the same way. We chose between JPEG, BMP, GIF, PNG, or TIFF. The program’s sparse features weren’t that great, but were effective, offering tools for rotating and converting to grayscale. Our test photos resized themselves and changed file types in a flash and didn’t lose anything from the original in the transfer. This was one of the fastest and simplest resizing tools we’ve ever operated.

PIXresizer is a freeware program. It comes as a compressed file.
