With a name that completely and accurately describes its sole function, Delete without Trash for Mac allows users to bypass the trashing step, but adds another that seems to defeat its time-saving purpose.

Delete without Trash for Mac downloads quickly. The installation folder also contains a readme file with instructions. The program, itself, is easy to use. There is no interface, but it makes changes to the computer so that the user has additional options when right clicking files. This includes a “Delete as Administrator” function, which directly removes the file after the entry of the administrator password. As claimed, the files are directly deleted, bypassing the trash can; although having to enter the administrator password means you’re still taking the same number of steps to delete files. The program did not appear to have technical support or updates available, but it did include an uninstaller, which is a welcome feature.

While functional as a quick and easy delete application, Delete without Trash for Mac simply swaps one action for another. If you type fast, this may make the process slightly faster, but we just weren’t sold.

Right Zoom for Mac addresses the annoying problem of the Mac’s green zoom window button. Rather than simply maximizing the window to fit the screen, users still must click the lower right corner and drag the window larger. This application changes the default button functions, making it a true maximize feature.

The freeware program works in the background to change the default functions. After downloading quickly, the program brings up a preferences menu. This allows for Right Zoom for Mac to be activated at all times, or when an additional hot key is pressed. There are a number of different key options and combinations available. An additional menu, easily accessible from the top of the window, allows for the program to be activated for only certain applications. These include office suites, the finder, and Web browsers, among many others. Users can also set the program to operate in all applications, except certain designated ones. After being initiated, the program works as advertised. The only downside is the advertisement that displays along the main menu’s bottom, but this is not much of an issue for the freeware program.

For those who want a true window maximizing feature on their computer, Right Zoom for Mac works well and is easy to set up.

Primarily used as a parental control tool, Free Website Blocker for Mac easily blocks access to specific Web sites by defining words or phrases which to block, or by simply blocking complete URLs. For those who need a basic program to block specific online content, this program performs adequately.

Free Website Blocker for Mac starts up into a basic menu that includes few buttons or available options. The first is a check box for turning the program on or off, and has no other buttons other than an apply button. Other sub-menus allow for the filter to be applied either to a specific Web address or Web pages with certain terms in them. Users can easily type the terms into the window and click the “Apply” button to initiate them. The program does not have any other options, and lacks any feature for password-protecting changes. During testing, the Web pages entered were blocked, but any person wanting to change this could easily open the program and do so. Adding a password protection option would enhance this program and make it more secure.

For blocking Web sites quickly, Free Website Blocker for Mac works well, but those with technologically savvy children would likely want to look for a more sophisticated password-protected option that isn’t so easily accessed.
