Computers are excellent labor-saving devices, particular for chores as mundane as printing envelopes and labels. Label Maker Pro streamlines many of these basic office tasks, allowing users to draw information from a database or an Excel Workbook to print badges, mailing envelopes, or letters for thousands of people in a matter of minutes. The software comes with a number of commonly used templates, which can be customized by moving and adding graphical elements. New designs can be saved as templates for later reuse. We would have liked to see a little more variety in the graphics tools and ready-made graphic elements provided, however. Similarly, we stumbled over a few minor design quirks, such as the inability to link a template’s existing text box to a database field. Nevertheless, Label Maker Pro’s solid features make it an affordable and generally hassle-free option for business users.

Don’t be fooled by the adorable kittens and the yuk-yuk humor: making a greeting card is serious work. Belltech Greeting Card Designer is an intuitive, if very basic, app for creating personalized cards. Like most card-creation programs, you can work off a template or start from scratch, choosing your layout and font properties. Images from the program’s clip art gallery add flair, and you can also choose JPEG, BMP, GIF, PNG, WMF, or TIFF image files from your own library. There are some nice features, such as size-adjustable drawing shapes; however, all but the most novice users will find the features simplistic and the graphic art outdated. Budget-conscious users and budding designers looking to turn out creative and professional-looking products will want a program with more power and sophistication. However, if it’s a basic card creator you’re after, especially one that’s child-friendly, Belltech’s icon-rich navigation lets you publish cards in a snap.

Small Business Publisher promises to help entrepreneurs avoid having their materials professionally designed and printed. While it does its best to help even those with no artistic ability, the program takes some getting used to.

This download does a great job of covering the bases for users who are either ready to jump right in and design (thanks to its three-step startup menu), or those who need a little coaching (thanks to its Help file and two online tutorials). However, the actual design screen will take some exploring no matter how you get started. For example, the design tools change with each template item highlighted. We initially found this confusing, but grew to love its versatility, which made for quick and simple customizations. In general, filling in the templates was intuitive and even fun thanks to the text boxes.

Small Business Planner offers users a wide swath of templates, from brochures to letterheads and business cards, which will do a good job of covering user needs. However, we were surprised that some templates looked very professional (like the letterhead and brochures) while others looked like they were designed on an old word processor (advertisements and fliers). The program also places a watermark on each project until the program is purchased. Still, we found this to be a capable desktop program for people looking to design their own marketing materials.
