With ShareMouse for Mac you can seamlessly share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers on the same network. If you are willing to buy the full version, you can even drag and drop files between computers, enable sharing on more than just two monitors, and prevent accidental monitor switching.

Pros

Doesn’t require device pairing: Once the cursor is on one screen, the shared keyboard will also function for that screen. With ShareMouse for Mac there is no need to pair or unpair Bluetooth devices.

Works seamlessly: When you drag your cursor to the edge of one screen it automatically jumps over to the neighboring monitor. This app also allows you to share the clipboard between computers, which means that if you “copy” something on one screen, you can use the keyboard to then “paste” it onto a document open on your other screen.

Mac OS X and Windows cross-platform support: This application allows you to control a PC from a Mac and vice versa.

Cons

Cursor a bit slow on second monitor: We noticed absolutely no difference between the functionality of the keyboard between monitors, but the cursor did respond with a very slight lag once it crossed over to the second screen. We noticed this both when using our iMac’s magic mouse on our MacBook Air’s screen and when using our MacBook Air’s trackpad to control the cursor on our iMac’s screen. Although this change in responsiveness was noticeable, it was not significant.

Bottom Line

If you are working with multiple computer monitors on a regular basis, you should give ShareMouse for Mac a go. It’s easy to navigate and besides, it comes with a detailed, helpful user guide. While you must purchase a license to take full advantage of some of this application’s features, it’s definitely a program that can increase your productivity.

PhraseExpress allows you to create many different types of macros to automate various tasks on your computer. While you may barely notice this program running in the background at times, it will quickly make your life much easier and can significantly reduce your total keystrokes each day.

Pros

Demonstration Macros: There are quite a few different Demonstration Macros included in this program that can give you an idea of what the app is capable of. Options include Date and Time, Data Picker, Multiple Choice Text, Mouse Cursor Control, Keyboard Layout Switching, and Automatic Email Creation.

Basic interface: As soon as you install and open this app, it begins running in the background and is accessible from the toolbar in the lower right-hand corner of your screen. Clicking the icon brings up a straightforward menu, with some options that expand to show other, more detailed menus. There are no bells and whistles to be found here, but the streamlined design is efficient and effective.

Cons

Learning curve: This app offers tons of functionality, but it can take some time to learn all of the ins and outs. This isn’t the type of program you can just install and begin to use right away, but the effort you put in to learn how to use all of its features will be worth it in the end.

PhraseExpress is a versatile and efficient program that can help you ease all types of repetitive tasks. It’s completely free, and although it may take some getting used to, especially for novice users, the benefits are worth the effort in the end.

ShareMouse Mouse and Keyboard Sharing lets you control network computers with one keyboard and mouse, and share files, too. Rolling your mouse to the edge of one PC’s desktop moves control to the next PC and dims the first PC’s screen. Moving the cursor back restores control to the first PC. There’s a QuickJump hot key combo, too, and there’s a Panic key that also reverts to the main system and even a password option. This free tool works fine, though it takes practice.

We installed ShareMouse on two networked Windows PCs. The installer can configure Windows Firewall and applicable services, but be sure to enable ShareMouse in your other antivirus and security software. The app’s settings include hot keys, scroll speed, and choice of network adapters and ports as well as some Demo features. Under Data Exchange, we could enable Drag and Drop (A Demo feature) and Clipboard Synchronization, including a customizable hot key for pasting shared clipboard data. The Monitor Manager displays available monitors in a desktop window and also identifies each display with a large letter: A, B, and so on, as required.

We moused to the edge of our main PC’s screen, and the cursor activated in the next PC’s screen while the first screen dimmed. Huge arrows indicate control direction, even across a large room. We could use our mouse and keyboard normally in the active PC. But it takes a steady wrist to keep the mouse from jumping to the next PC (or back to the first) if you get too close to the edge, especially in widescreen displays. But ShareMouse Mouse and Keyboard Sharing actually controls multiple PCs with one mouse, one keyboard, and a little practice — and for free.
