Baidu Spark Security is an alternative browser you can use to surf the Web without having to worry about compromising your privacy or security along the way. The interface is similar to Chrome, so you won’t have much trouble finding your way around, and the connection is generally quick despite the added security measures.

Pros

Special tools: There are a set of special tools arrayed across the top of the interface that you can use for quick access to these features. Options include Media Download, Torrent Download, Capture Screen Region, Open Downloads Manager, and Account Protection, which stores the current page’s log-in information for later use.

Security features: This browser comes with a built-in Virus Scanner to prevent you from downloading anything potentially harmful. It also has an Adware Block to minimize unwanted intrusions while you’re browsing and an extra line of protection that prevents other programs from modifying your existing Security and Privacy settings.

Cons

Responsiveness: Links clicked through this browser didn’t always respond the first time. YouTube videos also took a bit longer to load than they did through Chrome, and some of them didn’t respond at all.

Bottom Line

Baidu Spark Security is a good browser option to try out, if you’re concerned about the security of your computer or safeguarding your personal information. There were some bugs during testing, so you may not want to use it for all of your online needs. But it’s free, and it’s a good tool to have at your disposal for use with especially sensitive tasks.

Baidu PC Faster scans your PC deeply to find and delete junk files, unnecessary programs, and large files that sap and compromise performance. It can scan and optimize all areas with a single click or individually. With an attractive app-like interface, it’s easy to use, too. This free tool’s extras include the FasterNow desktop widget, Game Faster accelerator, App Store download manager, and Wi-Fi Hotspot.

Pros

Deep clean: PC Faster’s Deep Clean option looks for Privacy vulnerabilities ranging from video files to Office apps and cleans traces that other programs miss.

Large files cleaner: PC Faster found numerous large files that we could safely delete, including installers, extracted archives, data logs, and temporary files — including its own temporary files!

Medalist: While our results didn’t exactly support Baidu’s claim that our PC was running 106 percent faster after cleaning, our machine earned a Bronze Medal for being faster than most other users’ PCs.

Cons

Virus Scan: While the included Virus Scan (Cloud, Full, Custom, Internet, and Game Scans) tool is hardly a detriment, it’s not an alternative to a full antivirus solution, and we worry some users might see it as such.

Use with care: PC Faster can delete files, remove programs, change settings, and do other things that can compromise your PC, so be careful what you tell it to do.

Bottom Line

Baidu’s PC Faster cleaned and boosted our system significantly without causing any problems, even when pushed to extremes. It’s one of the more complete and better performing system cleaners we’ve tried.

Baidu Antivirus 2013 is light on system resources yet big on protection, fast, and free forever. Up-and-comer Baidu’s antivirus solution protects your system with Baidu Antivirus and Cloud Security Engines and Avira Antivirus Engine. Baidu Antivirus can be customized to favor speed or protection, and it runs happily alongside other antivirus programs — both uncommon traits. Baidu Antivirus 2013 (version 3.6.2) runs in Windows XP to 8.

After installing Baidu Antivirus, we did three things: verified that it played well with our existing tools (it did), updated its definitions (they were), and scanned our system. Baidu Antivirus offers Quick, Full, and Custom scans. The Quick scan is very fast, indeed; fast enough to scan at boot without slowing your PC much. Custom scans can include portable devices. The Full scan takes about as much time as other programs, and it finds more, too, though it returned a false positive on a firewire driver. But six others were smelly enough to toss on the safe side. We opened the Settings and clicked “Virus Scan,” where we could select file types to scan and exclude, choose actions upon detection, and exclude or set size limits on archived files. Under Engine Options, we could set Low, Normal, and High detection levels to vary the impact of scans on system performance and also enable or disable Avira Engine with separate checkboxes for real-time protection and virus scan. We could also set options for some extra features, such as USB and Download Protection and Proactive Defense. Quarantine, Exclusion, and Log features all open from the main screen.

Baidu Antivirus 2013 impressed us with its speed and depth of coverage. It’s a better choice for experienced users due to its options and because its deep scans can return false positives that beginners might overlook. We’ll be watching Baidu’s antivirus offering with interest!
