AVG TuneUp is a free Windows utility designed to clean up junk files on your PC and possibly increase system performance.

Pros

One-click maintenance: AVG PC TuneUp’s initial setup is streamlined. There’s really no room for error, since one-click optimization is the first option you see, giving a clear impression that PC TuneUp is hassle free.

Control: When AVG PC TuneUp discovers issues, it presents them in a pop-up window that lets you control which files to clean and which to delete. Highlight a file to reveal a short description of what it is and what it does to your Windows PC.

Clean design: PC TuneUp clearly shows you its process, from Registry scanning to defragmentation analysis. Though it shows warning icons for more system-critical issues, PC TuneUp generally avoids overzealous warnings and large, bold fonts that might give you a sense of pressure or panic.

Cons

Miscategorization: Sometimes it’s questionable whether what PC TuneUp declares a problem is really a problem. During our tests, PC TuneUp reported a Windows Media Player option and a Firefox master password setting as errors under PC Health. Though keeping track of browser credentials is a good practice, alerts like these could confuse you about what kind of settings qualify as risks.

Limited trial use: In the trial, maintenance scanning is limited to three days, and the entire program is subscription based. Though the maintenance feature is effective, we find it hard to justify the asking price, nor do we see the app’s advantage over free products without the peace of mind.

Bottom Line

AVG PC TuneUp is a well-designed and effective tool that mostly accomplishes what it claims. Its advantage lies in its streamlined user flow and one-click-friendly design. Though PC TuneUp has many tools, there are free programs that perform most of the same tasks, so power users may find it hard to justify paying for the software.

AVG AntiVirus Business Edition 2013 continues the slimmer, flatter redesign from 2012, and brings the same interface improvements from its younger, smaller Free and Pro Antivirus counterparts.

The AVG installer will walk you through a few screens and present the option to install or omit additional products like Identity Protection, Email Scanner, and Surf-Shield. However, it also includes additional tools more appropriate for corporate IT environments, like Remote Admin. The AVG Toolbar is also offered, though, as opt-in as opposed to the opt-out setups found in the free counterparts. AVG does include Do Not Track, which some users may find an incentive for installation.

The actual installer, itself, is stripped down to 35.8 MB, lighter and snappier, as a result of redesign as with its younger cousins. Not having to reboot is an added plus.

Upon first opening, you’ll notice a clean, colorful tile interface, looking very much like Modern UI via Windows 8. Taking cues from the native design of Windows 8, AVG AntiVirus Business Edition 2013 sports an interface that looks modern, approachable, and just plain clean. Not just for looks, the button layouts and simplified menu design greatly cater towards the touch-centric, keeping tiles nice and large, while menu items are spaced apart for easier interaction. The trial notifier can also be minimized out of sight.

Business Edition aims to reach the corporate environment and so omits the extra features from the consumer level suites like mobile protection and speed tests. Instead, Business Edition includes a Remote Admin feature that lets IT admins remotely access AVG Data Centers that are setup on client computers in the corporate networks and install protective measures straight from an Admin server. Though we weren’t able to test remote scanning on a network- wide scale, AVG’s individual scan evaluations can be found in our AVG AntiVirus 2013 review.

Even as a standalone performer, AVG Business Edition still maintains the security bar set from its other product lines. The big differentiator is how willing IT admins are to revamp their current corporate security placements and opt in for AVG. If your company is quick to adopt and adapt, then Business Edition already brings its stellar track record from its single user line. Replicating AVG’s experience combined with a simplified remote management workflow makes this an attractive solution and at least worth testing for a trial run if your business is looking for reliable Internet security.

AVG Antivirus free is one of the most popular antivirus programs on the market. The company is moving from annual releases to rolling releases: as long as you have a subscription, you’ll have the latest version of their software.

Pros

Rolling releases: In the past, buying a copy of AVG would get you regular antivirus updates, but features would not change until you bought the following year’s version. Now you can always have the newest version of AVG.

It’s free: Although it’s release method has changed, you can still get a version that costs no money — though there are a few strings attached (more on that in the Cons section below).

Modular installation: AVG has separate components that can monitor your desktop email client and your Web browser for threats, and you can choose to not install both of these, if you have other software that covers these bases already.

Cons

Installer gotchas: If you don’t intervene by using a “custom” installation, the installer will put you on a 30-day trial of one of the company’s paid products instead of installing AVG Antivirus Free. And it will change your Web browser’s homepage and default search engine to Bing.com.

PC Analyzer has issues: AVG Antivirus features a PC Analyzer, which checks for registry errors, junk files and broken shortcuts that can be deleted, and disk defragmentation. The problem is, you’re not supposed to defrag a solid-state drive, but PC Analyzer did not appear to notice what type of drive it was. The analyzer is also all-or-nothing; you can’t skip the defrag or the registry cleaner and just delete junk files and shortcuts, for example.

Bottom Line

According to independent testing labs such as AV-Test and AV-Comparatives, AVG uses a solid antivirus engine. But the hoops you have to jump through in the installer and the technical error in the PC Analyzer have an impact on trust and confidence in the product.

Pros

Scanning options: With AVG AntiVirus for Mac, you can either complete a full scan of your computer, or you can select a file or files to scan independently. This saves you time and lets you avoid repeating scans of the same items over and over again. There are also several options on the Preferences page that allow you to customize your scanning further, including the option to scan for Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPs) that you may have unintentionally downloaded.

Real-time Protection: Real-time Protection detects and eliminates new threats in real time, so once you’ve cleaned off your machine, you won’t have to worry about new infections taking hold. This feature can be turned on and off as you see fit.

Cons

Slow scans: In testing, a full scan of our Macbook Air took over an hour and returned a result of no threats detected. This seemed long for a relatively small machine without any issues. But once you’ve completed a full scan once, you won’t need to repeat it often.

Bottom Line

AVG AntiVirus is a good free tool for protecting your computer from a wide range of external threats. The file scan option lets you choose exactly what you want to scan, and Real-time Protection safeguards against new threats.

AVG Internet Security wants to convince you that an antimalware security suite is worth paying for, in a climate where free options from Avast (Windows, Mac), Avira (Windows, Mac), and AVG itself (Windows, Mac) are just a few clicks away. It’s also priced to contend with the big dogs at McAfee (Windows), Norton (Windows) and Kaspersky (Windows, Mac). Let’s see if Internet Security can separate itself from the pack.

Pros

The interface is clean and fairly easy to navigate: AVG’s main window tells you at a glance what every component of the suite does, in plain English. The main menu is clearly labeled, there’s a back button in the upper left that takes you back to the previous window, and you can set up specific types of malware scans in just a few clicks, starting with the gear icon next to the big Scan Computer button near the bottom.

A wealth of options under the hood: AVG might look basic on the surface, but clicking the Menu button and selecting Settings opens up a layer cake of toggles and sliders. Clicking the question mark icon in the upper right opens up a window that explains each setting in detail, without overwhelming you with technical jargon or marketing-speak.

Cons

The installer could be more attentive: When choosing the custom installation route, you’re given the option to change your browser’s home page, new tab page, and search engine to one recommended by AVG. If you decline this offer, the installer still adds an “AVG Web TuneUp” browser extension that empowers itself to make these changes anyway. (And between Firefox and Chrome, only the latter articulates what the add-on can do; Firefox just tells you that program X wants to install browser add-on Y.)

A surprising amount of upsell for a premium product: At $70 for an annual subscription, AVG Internet Security wants to live on the same block as Norton, McAfee, or Kaspersky. But by throwing several sales pitches into the interface, the user experience loses some luster.

For example, you can’t do a regular malware scan without the application suggesting you download a trial of a program called “AVG PC TuneUp,” which turns out to cost another $50 a year. CCleaner appears to be able to perform the bulk of PC TuneUp tasks for free. The TuneUp tool can check for updates to other apps installed on your PC while CCleaner does not, but this update check is frequently bundled into other antimalware suites at no extra cost. Spending $120 a year total to close the gap is a tough sell.

Bottom Line

AVG Internet Security performs its basic antimalware protection competently, according to independent labs like AV-Test and AV-Comparatives. And there’s plenty of behavior explanation and customization. However, comparably priced alternatives are less aggressive about selling additional services and installing add-ons in your Web browser. In a product category as competitive as this one, Internet Security comes off a little pushy.
