Orca Browser offers users the standard features found in many of the more popular Web browsers, all of which work very well, but the extras it throws into the mix failed to impress.

Though a little on the cluttered side, the user interface will look familiar to you. Navigational and command buttons are at the top of the window. Menu options give you access to more customization options to change the view, as well as the standard Internet options for managing your browsing history. There’s an auto-fill feature that saves you the hassle of signing in and out of frequently visited sites. The Online Storage feature lets you save bookmarks, RSS feeds, and password information so that you can access them from any PC. It requires that you create a password and enter an address to get started. Once we entered our information, it wasn’t entirely clear where to go next. When we clicked on the status-bar icon, a window appeared just to let us know that we were connected to the online storage. There was no way to manage our information, or to exit the feature. A visit to Help page returned a “page cannot be found” message.

While Orca Browser worked well as a simple browser, we were left a little put off by some of its features. It’s free, but so are the other browsers, and the extras that distinguish this from the competition weren’t enough to woo us away from our current choice.

For those who like their customization in-house, the Avant Browser’s latest update might appeal to you. Built on an IE-rendering engine, Avant takes off in a different direction–IE if it were being produced by a small firm instead of Microsoft.

The browser is sufficiently fast, preloaded with two dozen similar skins as well as tabbed browsing and modular toolbars that let you move around and hide the Status bar, Toolbar, Search window, and navigation controls. The Menu bar, though, is counterintuitively pinned to the upper-right corner, and icons for proprietary functions, such as an in-page search term highlighting toggle, aren’t instantly comprehensible.

Avant can save personalized data online, making bookmarks and form content accessible from any machine. Around the same size as Firefox, Avant includes many features that are available to Firefox users only through plug-ins–such as automatic form fillers. The Full Screen view autohides all menu bars, a nice touch, but certain plug-ins–notably Flash–didn’t work on Windows Vista.

Avant is a good browser with some nice built-in features and interface-customization options, but the lack of extensibility and Vista problems don’t help. We recommend it to users who want a Microsoft-based engine but think that Internet Explorer 7 is a pain.

Side-by-side comparison: You can view multiple site tabs at once in the same window by placing them side by side. This can be very helpful if you’re a Web developer and want to compare how your site looks in different Web browsers.

Highly customizable: Since Avant Browser doesn’t support all third-party Web browser extensions, the developers have tried to ensure that all popular functionality is present in the app itself. This includes things like a password manager, page translation, mouse gestures, cloud backup, ad and Flash blocker, auto refresh, and even a video downloader.

Cons

Buggy: During our tests, we regularly ran into Chrome engine errors although that didn’t crash our system or the app itself. Another bug that we discovered is that you cannot open a blank new tab — it will always load the site that you were looking at prior to pressing the “New Tab” button.

Limited extension support: Although the app sports three of the most popular Web browser engines under its hood, not all extensions for the three platforms can be installed and used successfully. In our tests we’ve had a 60 percent success rate when trying to add extensions to the browser.

Bottom Line

Avant Browser Ultimate is a good companion for Web developers since it allows rapid testing and comparison between different browser engines. You should also give this free app a go, if you’re not happy with your current Web browser and are looking for something different and more powerful.
