AOMEI Backupper offers backup and restoration services with its easy-to-use application. The streamlined design and fast response of this program are excellent, but the lack of features offered in the free version of Backupper may be disappointing.

Pros

Quick performance: We tested the speed and precision of AOMEI Backupper and noted that backups were very fast; our 18GB partition drive was backed up in under 30 minutes. The restoration process took only a few seconds, and all files were preserved accurately.

Top-notch support: Very few free programs offer as much support as AOMEI Backupper. The video tutorials, FAQs, and how-to guides presented more information than we’d expected, and the activity of the support forums was phenomenal, with many postings occurring as we tested this program.

Straightforward design: Although the program window is smaller than we’d like, the interface is smooth and easy to use. A small number of tabs eases using this program, and each feature takes you through a step-by-step process to ensure success.

Cons

Limited features: AOMEI Backupper performs very well, but we were disappointed that you have to pay for additional features like the ability to combine multiple backups into one. The advertised benefits of the paid version seem limited, so we would take caution before purchasing the additional tools.

Bottom Line

AOMEI Backupper is a responsive and excellent program that offers much more than the standard free application. We recognize the value of this software, but we recommend that AOMEI Backupper add the ability to schedule backups. All the same, this is a high performance application, and we suggest that you download AOMEI Backupper.

AOMEI Backupper for Win7 has what we like in a full backup solution, starting with the ability to completely restore your system from a backup (with the help of a bootable system restore disc also created by Backupper). Backupper can back up partitions, volumes, and entire discs. It creates full or incremental backups, either automatically or manually, with the usual compression and encryption options found in premium backup tools — except it’s not a premium backup tool. The one thing Backupper lacks, we can do without: a price tag. AOMEI Backupper for Win7 is freeware. And it’s not just for Windows 7 (both 32-bit and 64-bit) but also Windows 8 and Server 2008.

We’re not the first to remark on the “family resemblance” of certain types of software, and AOMEI Backupper for Win7’s blue-toned user interface practically describes, itself. That’s bad? No way: The easier, the better goes for most software, but backup tools, especially. We clicked “Add New Backup,” and Backupper’s wizard walked us though the steps for creating a Disk Backup, Partition Backup, or System Backup: Which one you should choose depends on your system configuration. But you could do worse than click System Backup, a one-click process (with the usual options) that backs up your C drive. Be sure to choose a suitable backup location, such as a removable hard drive. You can configure Backupper to update backups as files change, though we prefer the option to create a new backup on schedule. Though it took longer and used more space, we took a full, uncompressed backup created with full system resources since there’s less to go wrong all around. Backupper also packs some extras in its Utilities menu, such as the Check Image tool for verifying backup integrity and the Create Bootable Media tool, which we recommend visiting. The Help file includes many tutorials and other resources to help you with all that.

Like many, we prefer premium backup solutions to the built-in Windows Backup. If cost has kept you from upgrading (or, gasp, led you to not back up your files at all) then download and run AOMEI Backupper for Win7 today.

Many people prefer to use a standalone disk management utility instead of the Windows Disk Manager for resizing and moving partitions, formatting disks, and other critical tasks. Until recently, most such tools have been premium software, but Aomei Partition Assistant Home Edition is a full-featured freeware disk management utility that can even be used commercially, which is great news for home and small businesses.

It can create, convert, hide, format, delete, wipe, resize, copy, split, merge, and move partitions, including altering existing partitions without data loss or corruption, on hard drives, flash drives, and similar storage devices. It works in Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and 7, both 32-bit and 64-bit editions.

Partition Assistant’s blue tones, linear disk capacity displays, and toolbar make it a good fit for Office and similar suites, and the left-hand navigation panel and full menus not only display the program’s features but make it a cinch to access them. Partition Assistant displayed our system’s three physical disks (SSD, HDD, and USB) as well as each disk’s partitions. We selected a nearly empty 140GB partition on our 2.5-inch hard drive and started by changing the drive letter and label, moving on to various formatting, resizing, and splitting options.

Since this drive only held an out-of-date backup, we weren’t worried about reformatting and resizing it, but Partition Assistant didn’t lose any data that we didn’t deliberately overwrite by reformatting the disk. One especially useful feature is the ability to hide partitions. Many users like to “overprovision” their SSDs by partitioning off a percentage of the capacity to prevent all the drive’s memory cells from filling. Hiding the partition makes it easy to keep from using it accidentally. Partition Wizard also has three Wizards to handle important jobs: Extend Partition, Disk Copy, and Partition Copy. The Partition Copy Wizard let us specify Quick Copy, which only copies the used space, and Sector-by-Sector, which copies the entire partition structure to a new disk.

Aomei Partition Assistant Home Edition would seem to be the most powerful and capable freeware disk partition utility we’ve tried. It’s highly recommended for all users, and especially those with multidisk systems.
