If you’re looking for an easy-to-use digital scrapbook, Photo Collage Maker may be for you. You can use it to create attractive photo collages for your PC, e-mail, or Web site, too, and print out your creations as actual scrapbooks with ease. It comes with a wide range of backgrounds, clip art, borders, and effects that make it easy to put images of different sizes and even formats together.

Its clean, attractive interface keeps things simple. Simplicity is the program’s biggest advantage, since most new PCs already come with at least one image-editing tool, often a “lite” version of a powerful program like Photoshop. But it can take longer to learn to use such extensive and complex tools than it does to actually complete a project with Photo Collage Maker. It collects all the features, frames, borders, enhancements, and effects you need in one place, without overwhelming you with options and settings.

Using Photo Collage Maker is easy: you simply choose your background, colors, clip art, and other aspects of composition, browse to your image files, and add your selections. We’d like to see the ability to add multiple files at once, since it can be awkward to scroll back through the folder. Some of the effects are a bit difficult to use; for instance, the perspective tool has a button to apply the effect but not one to undo it. Photo Collage Maker downloads as a ZIP file; the 30-use trial version lacks the ability to print collages and download new clip art.

Framing Studio allows digital photographers the opportunity to line their pictures up with different frames and apply special effects to each shot. With a simple interface, our only concern is whether all users will find the product useful.

The program has a very simple interface featuring a large center screen for viewing photos and big command icons along the left side for applying frames and effects. Users looking for a lot of choices will be pleased with the dozens of framing options ranging from wild and crazy, to dignified and traditional. The effects are less impressive, thanks to a small list of options that range from creating a blur, a swirl or a photo negative. Borders and effects were easily and quickly applied to our photos. Users choose a photo to manipulate and then need only make a few simple clicks to change the appearance and add a new border. An added bonus is the controls within each border to alter its color, appearance and more.

Your time is limited with the program’s 30-use trial. While we were pleased with the fact that Framing Studio quickly and easily created new borders for our photos, we wonder how much appeal this download will have. Its images are certainly a fun way to alter shots, but will not appeal to those looking for a professional way to alter photos. However, if you’re looking for a quick way to add fun to your photos, this program is a great choice.

Greeting Card Studio purports to allow users to create attractive, high quality greeting cards. In reality, this program’s lack of features and buggy operation makes us think we’d be better off with construction paper and markers.

The program’s interface is basic and looks a lot like many other image-editing programs. The trial version comes with 16 templates, which range from cutesy to tacky. None of them was anything we’d want to give to someone (at least not someone we liked). With a program designed specifically to create greeting cards, we figured there would be options to create a cover image and then put a message inside, but all this program seems able to do is insert your photos into its goofy borders and allow you to print them. We thought we might have better luck creating a card from scratch than with the templates, but every time we tried to select the paper size–the first step in creating a card–the New Project screen closed itself. We tried over and over again, but the program seemed to play a cruel cat-and-mouse game with us, never letting us complete the setup for our new card. Thus, we can’t attest to the features in this part of the program, because we were never able to get it to work. The program’s built-in Help file is very basic and not particularly helpful.

Greeting Card Studio has a 30-use trial, which is more than enough. It comes as a ZIP file but installs and uninstalls without issues. We do not recommend this program; it doesn’t do anything that couldn’t be done more easily with another program.

Photo Art Studio offers several tools for altering photographs while remaining friendly to all users. The program’s impressive collection of tools was matched by its impressively easy navigation.

We loved the program’s interface because it was professionally designed and offered intuitive onscreen insight that kept us from needing to visit the instructional Help file. The program featured a stunning amount of editing choices for our photo, all easily accessible via a single menu complete with thumbnail examples. Ranging from standard editing and cropping tools to applying masks and filters, which drastically altered the photo’s makeup, to designing a greeting card or slapping on a watermark, all the choices performed very well and were instantly understandable. This was quite a feat, since we’ve tested many editing programs with fewer options that took a lot of work to use. The program offered a feature to change up the layout’s skin, which worked well and had many options, but didn’t feel like a necessity. By including every editing option we could think of and making each easy to use, this program was a success.

Photo Art Studio has a 30-use trial. It comes as a compressed file, and offers a lot of options, making each of them simple enough for novices. We recommend this program.

Photo Collage Creator provides simple tools for making complex photo collages. By offering a great wizard, this program appeals to users of all skill levels.

The program’s interface was a breeze to work with, thanks to a wizard that organized each step to design our custom collage. This was the highlight of a professional-looking setup that instantly felt comfortable to operate. We were able to select every aspect of our collage, focusing heavily on its design templates that provided a lot of different looks. The various backgrounds and themes all had a sleek appearance, which was appreciated, since we’ve tested many collage programs that make everything look very amateurish. This was never the problem with this program’s fantastic imagery since it combined our favorite shots with some interesting visuals, to create something fit for hanging on a wall. Our favorite feature was the Process menu, which allowed us to make the collage look like it came from long ago, ranging from sepia tone to a decayed old picture. Thanks to the program’s easy-to-use wizard, we whipped up a fine collage in only a few minutes.
