For people who need to quickly print many envelopes, opening a word-processing application for setting them up requires many steps. EasyEnvelopes for Mac creates a widget that can set up a basic envelope and print it on its own, but its complex setup and system effect are problematic.

Available as freeware, EasyEnvelopes for Mac downloads quickly. Its native installer automatically places the program as an inactive widget for use in the Mac dashboard. All of these steps occurred easily and without problems until we attempted to place the widget in the active dashboard. After this happened, the program moved to the active area, but it immediately began slowing the entire Mac system down to a crawl. Other applications, whether full programs or other widgets, began shutting down or locking up. During testing, it took several minutes to even access the System Preferences menu and Activity Monitor to determine what was happening. After a full restart and complete uninstall and reinstall of the widget, it did start to work. The return address automatically filled in on the widget’s envelope menu, allowing users to search in their address book for contacts to enter into the main address window. There is a small area showing the active printer and a button to easily print the envelope. Once the installation and activation problems ended, the program worked as intended.

While functional after many attempts, EasyEnvelope for Mac’s system effects and problematic installation make it a less useful way to quickly make envelopes.

Snapz Pro X for Mac is a capture utility for Mac OS X. It is available from several download sites, but with a purchase price of $69 if you want to upgrade after using the free trial. Snapz Pro X for Mac installs cleanly and quickly.

More than a simple screenshot utility, Snapz Pro X for Mac lets you capture anything that appears on your screen either a still images or as a movie in QuickTime format. Snapz Pro X for Mac can capture full-screen or a smaller portion, and provides a simple way to make product demos, tutorial videos, and other movie-based narratives. Preference dialogs let you set the frame rate you want, as well as whether audio is captured with video, and special abilities such as following the cursor or panning smoothly to new locations. Using a default codec of H.264, the video produced by Snapz Pro X for Mac is about as good as anything we’ve seen from much more expensive packages on the Mac. There’s a live preview window option that lets you see what is being recorded.

We used Snapz Pro X for Mac for a week and really got to like its capabilities. While not an inexpensive app it does have features that we’ve spent a lot more for in larger video production software packages. While you won’t want to spend $69 for a simple static screen capture utility, Snapz Pro X for Mac actually looks like a bargain when you add in all the capabilities it offers.

Ares is a graphical strategy and action game that takes place in the far reaches of the galaxy. Your mission is to reclaim the planet Earth from alien invaders, but to do that you have to handle manufacturing and resources, as well as be handy with your trigger finger to blow the enemy to little pieces. You can try Ares for free, but the full game will set you back $25.

The Ares interface is laid out with controls and status reports in a pane to the left, and the graphics in a much larger pane to the right. A few health, energy, and battery indicator strips are on the far right. The graphics are a bit clunky, but you overlook that once you get into the game. Ares has three tutorial levels that help you learn the game interface and mechanics. Once you work your way through these, you’re ready for the game itself. You start with simple patrols, fighting off attackers, work your way up to larger set pieces where you have to sacrifice a few good ships for the greater good, and end up with planetary invasions where you need to seize and hold strategic locations to win. There are twenty missions total in the single-player version, or you can go head-to-head in multiplayer. For those who want to extend their time with Ares, there’s a scenario editor.

Ares will appeal to both the strategy and action gamer, but this mix of the two means both aspects are OK but not great. Also, the graphics are a bit of a letdown and could use a reworking. Having said that, the gameplay is interesting and many gamers will get hooked quickly.

WireTap Studio is an excellent, relatively inexpensive audio-capture tool that can help you record, edit, and export any audio on your Mac, whether from your overall system audio, a specific app (like Skype or iTunes), or even an external microphone.

For simple tasks, like recording an iChat conversation, you can access many of WireTap Studio’s features directly from its streamlined Controller window–including a very cool Live Preview, which lets you hear what your audio will sound like before you start recording (even as you switch formats, compression rates, and more, on the fly). The rest of WireTap Studio’s interface is also reassuringly straightforward, with handy (if not professional-grade) tools for editing, and a lossless editing environment; so if you cut or reduce the bit rate of a recording, it’s easy to go back and change your mind later.

With extras like video tutorials, drag-and-drop exporting, scheduling (WireTap Studio will even wake or turn on your Mac), and the ability to record from two sources at once, WireTap Studio is a solid app and a good value.
