Though the demo for this WWII first-person shooter offers the same great gameplay as the original Call of Duty, the sequel doesn’t contain enough new features to warrant a top rating. Also, the included mission seems too short, considering the large download and lengthy installation.

From the start, the immersive cinematic presentation that made the original so popular is evident. Your convoy of jeeps rides into El Daba, Egypt, where you must take out four German artillery units, signal the headquarters location to your fleet, grab secret dispatches, and reconnect with your troop at the docks, fighting all the way. The new health system doesn’t offer a hard count, but rather limits your short-term damage, much like Halo’s shield system. You’ll only know you’re hurt when your breathing becomes erratic and you start to palpitate. Yikes! Resting in a safe spot will heal your character. The other obvious new feature is the ability to climb over small barriers, but the height and type of material you can vault seem arbitrary.

The sound and graphics are again excellent. Planes flying overhead will shake the battlefield, and smoke grenades create an awesome fog of war. Our favorite facet of the first Call of Duty was the open-ended feel of the levels, and that’s no different in COD2. Though the demo mission is fairly straightforward, you can still explore the many alleys of the city, staking out the best camping spots for knocking off Jerries.

This long-anticipated first-person shooter certainly was worth the delay, as the demo proves. Though the gameplay of endless swarms of undead creatures is nothing original, the presentation is superb, and the demo is generous in scope. Some gamers might be disappointed with some of the gimmicks, but it’s hard to complain about the explosive action, amazing graphics and sound, and expansive environment. Three levels of difficulty also make the experience available for all gaming abilities.

You play a new recruit of the Union Aerospace Corporation facility on Mars, on special assignment to find a missing scientist. Strange events at the UAC facility reach the expected climax, and the massive blasting begins. The demo isn’t terribly long, but it does introduce a variety of available weapons and equipment, including the essential PDA that stores access keys, video recordings, and other information. Much of the tension springs from the dark environments in which you can hold only your flashlight or a weapon, not both. The somewhat arbitrary limitation creates some great unexpected jolts. From the demo, Doom 3 looks like a slicker, faster, and scarier remake of the original, and that’s not a bad thing at all.

The demo version has enough to keep gamers happy for a while. Only three skaters and one level (the college campus) are available, but 16 various goals and missions gleaned from folks around town offer Tony Hawk newbies an excellent chance to try out all the essential jumps, kicks, grabs, and combos. Big fans of the series won t necessarily need to download the chunky 132MB file to learn anything new, yet the demo by itself beats the pants off some other full commercial offerings.
