This nearly decades-old sea battle adventure may have once been a captain’s favorite, but today the game’s graphics and sound track barely hold water. That said, there are pluses to keep hard-core strategy enthusiasts entertained. A well-designed interface, plenty of tips, and useful keyboard shortcuts make Admiral Sea Battles a very user-friendly game. What the game gains in usability, however, it lacks in action. Your main goal as captain is to maneuver your fleet through enemy waters, attacking aggressors and setting up bases to expand your power. Yet this is not a shoot-’em-up sea challenge. Boats move slowly, each attack focuses on only one boat at a time, and the intricate planning required to move your fleet around may offer thrills for only the most dedicated strategy enthusiasts. Admiral Sea Battles may not offer much for the modern swashbuckler, but dedicated fans of old-school strategy games may enjoy this aqueous cruise down memory lane.
