Out of the box, Windows can connect to the Internet, defrag your hard drive, and play a mean game of Minesweeper. But it doesn’t come with a decent calendar. The free Calendar 2000 attempts to fill that gap. It isn’t exactly what we’d call a scheduling application, but it sits in the system tray and lets you create recurring monthly and annual events. It shows standard holidays on their respective dates, and you can add and delete them as you like. The interface is relatively dull, but on the plus side you can set the time for four cities and specify map coordinates for a remarkable graphic display of the current moon and sun position. Unfortunately, the program doesn’t support event alarms. That’s a serious omission, but if you can get around it, you’ll find that in other respects Calendar 2000 fares pretty well.
