Unlike previous versions that were console ports, the 2003 version of Madden NFL was developed specifically for the PC, and it shows. The game’s artificial intelligence is outstanding. Running the same offensive play over and over is no longer a solid strategy, as the computer-based defense learns your moves and becomes tougher as you play. Unfortunately, the game’s interface is a bit clunky, especially if you’re using your keyboard rather than a gamepad. Regardless of what input device you use, it takes a couple of hours to get ahold of all the ways runs can be played, especially since the tutorial is disabled in the demo. Most of the game modes also are disabled, but the available Exhibition mode gives a good sneak peek into how the pigskin is played.
